What do you think someone with the genius of say Bowie or McCartney would do if they started making music today? Would they even give a toss about old-fashioned rock 'n' roll?

What do you think someone with the genius of say Bowie or McCartney would do if they started making music today? Would they even give a toss about old-fashioned rock 'n' roll? Someone of Bowie's musical ability especially if you mean starting out as a teenager or twenty something I would expect to have a great deal of influence from all musical backgrounds that have come before, essentially doing what Bowie was best at in terms of taking genres and previous styles to incorporate them into what became his own forward thinking sounds. I certainly think electronica, hip hop and later sub genres would have more of an influence on a new starter in this regard, but I would not be surprised to see him/her also take the best aspects of rock n' roll and mould them into something new that could be regarded as uniquely their own.

The Boy With The Arab Strap is a wonderful record. My fav by B&S and probably one of my fav of all the time, aswell (top 10) It's definitely the album I've listened to the most these last weeks. A lot, lot. It's brilliance from start to finish. I've tried to rank the tracks but it was impossible since there is almost no gap between most of them. Tagging Mean Mrs. Mustard matt carlober World71R theyknowwhatimean @driver7 If you haven't already listened to it, I'm sure you will dig it.

Sleep the Clock Around 3. Seymour Stein 4. The Rollercoaster Ride 5. Ease Your Feet in the Sea 6. Dirty Dream Number Two 7. The Boy With the Arab Strap 8. It Could Have Been a Brilliant Career 9. Chickfactor 10. Simple Things 11. Is It Wicked Not to Care? 12. A Space Boy Dream Space Boy Dream is probably the only one I wouldn't listen to unless listening through the album (though it's pretty funky!). The rest are all good to brilliant!

I think my list would be a bit similar to yours. But I'm sure it will have slight changes almost every day. I think I'd have Sleep The Clock Around at n°1, and Seymour Stein lower than in your list. Not sure at all about the rest.

I first got into them five years ago listening to The Life Pursuit but I bought the aforementioned album four years ago and its one of the best album from the 90s. Stars of Track and Field and Like Dylan In The Movies are my favourites. Your mention of them has piqued an interest regarding other threads in this forum - it's obvious now but I can hear the influence of them in your own songs you posted here. And the thread regarding tunes with great orchestration has to include There's Too Much Love from Fold Your Hands Child. The best use of chamber strings in a modern pop song by far.

If you haven't listened to Achtung Baby, do yourself a favor ASAP and listen to it. It's amazing.

I got into them one year ago at the same time I've started writing seriously so I think they influenced me a lot, melodically speaking. "Stars of Track and Field" and "Like Dylan In The Movies" are great tracks indeed. Highlights off "If You're Feeling Sinister" (with Get Me Away From Here I'm Dying), which is an other masterpiece, maybe in my top 20, ever.

Yeah, it's give or take between Sinister and Arab Strap as to which is their best. Very high quality and I'm actually surprised at their lack of commercial success seeing how much these two are revered.

mkoasis, your top 10 favourite Cure b-sides (and other assorted rarities)? I'll give you 12, how about that? 1. I'm Cold (bside of Jumping Someone Else's Train) 2. Another Journey by Train (bside of The Forest) 3. Descent (bside of Primary) 4. Splintered in her Head (bside of Charlotte Sometimes) *warning this one's super creepy* 5. The Upstairs Room (bside of The Walk) 6. The Exploding Boy (bside of Inbetween Days) 7. A Few Hours After This (bside of Inbetween Days) 8. Breathe (bside of Catch) 9. A Chain of Flowers (bside of Catch) 10. To the Sky (outtake) 11. Fear of Ghosts (bside of Love Song) *if you listen to just one, make it this* 12. 2 Late (bside of Love Song) 13. This Twilight Garden (bside of High) 14. Coming Up (Japanese bonus track for Bloodflowers) So I couldn't make it 14, but I hope you enjoy. That's the best of the Join the Dots 4CD boxset.

Between The Bars is a song I love one day, and the day after I can't listen to it.
You can't deny the beauty of the melody (especially in the verses) though.

Hate to start a conspiracy theory about Porcupine Tree's song Lazarus, but does it predict David Bowie's death?

Closer by The Chainsmokers has to be one of the worst songs of the year. Just play it on the radio enough times and people will start to believe it's a good song and "catchy". I'm not against radio pop per se but if it's so obviously bad it shouldn't be accepted

Puh, I don't know actually. To me it's just a very generic EDM song. Really boring and stupid. I could post it right now but I won't as I don't want to spoil your saturday
