Perhaps more relevant for 'older' bands but nonetheless...I feel you really get to know a band's catalogue once you get into their Bsides.
For me, it's The Verve - terrific bsides all around from 1992 to the last.
Also really enjoy Smashing Pumpkins, Travis, the Cure, and Stereophonics bsides (though I stopped following them since about 2004)
Oh and feel free to share a few.

Suede have some phenomenal B-sides;
Europe is Our Playground, My Dark Star, The Living Dead. They are the only band who I actually much prefer the b-sides to singles

I never realised that some of the best work is hidden in B-sides, or, more generally speaking, non-album tracks, until I got into Kasabian and then Oasis.
This year, when I reacquainted myself with my beloved Pogues, I came across the brilliant "Just Look Them Straight in the Eye and Say: Pogue Mahone!" which is an absolute treasure trove of B-sides, demos, soundtrack tracks, etc.

The Jam The Smiths
Young Noel Gallagher was a huge fan of The Jam and he wanted to make great B-sides, as great as A-sides if he will be in a band someday.

The Libertines have some great b-sides. And shitloads of amazing unreleased demos and songs only played live and such. This - easily another album's worth of tunes there. The Delaney and All At Sea are among their very best. Apart from that I've been digging Morrissey's b-sides lately - that man was ridiculously creative in the late 80s/early 90s. To have this as a b-side: Come to think of it, I hate how many bands have stopped doing b-sides or even some additional deluxe tracks on the album...always loved having some more stuff to dig into.

Radiohead, Coldplay, Embrace, and even Keane have amazing b-sides. I've also listened to a few U2 b-sides (Where Did It All Go Wrong, Sweetest Thing, and that's about it), and those are fantastic as well. Muse has some great ones too (The Groove, Futurism).

Songs like Who Knows, Man I'm Only Human, Knock Me Down are some of their best material.

The Smiths Stone Roses Morrissey Suede
Suede's Sci-Fi Lullabies is the second best b-side compilation of the 90's, so many outstanding b-sides.

I feel like discovering bsides is something that new music fans today will never get to experience and enjoy the same way. Lucky us.

I feel like discovering bsides is something that new music fans today will never get to experience and enjoy the same way. Lucky us. On the other hand, they'll never have the experience of shouting at their music playing device of choice something along the lines of: 'Acquiesce Noel? Really? Really mate? Half the World Away? The fucking Masterplan? What the fuck mate, what the actual fuckity fuck? You could have switched Idler's Dream for (Probably) all in the Mind. Let's All Make Believe for I Can See a Liar. Every album could have been a classic.' I know it's not very original, or even very articulate, but it is how I spend a good portion of my free time

I forgot Embrace's first 2 albums, b-sides were very good. Dry Kids is probably their top one, but wee gems like Free Ride, Butter Wouldn't Melt and The Way I Do were cool b-sides. the I Wouldnt Wanna Happen To You single was and still is up there. 2 cd's with different b-sides. aternate version of the single, I Know Whats Going On, Top Of The Heap, 3 Is A Magic Number.. and this one.. well I could go on forever. this band always reminds me of a fucking girl I'm still into. shame. have a lovely Friday, everyone

I've also listened to a few U2 b-sides (Where Did It All Go Wrong, Sweetest Thing, and that's about it), and those are fantastic as well. Muse has some great ones too (The Groove, Futurism). Good call on Embrace. I don't know how to best describe them, but I see them as the halfway point between Oasis and Coldplay. Dry Kids is arguably their finest collection of material gathered on a single album. And underneaththesky, the whole Drawn From Memory material is brilliant. I love that album, very underrated and no two songs sound alike. Like Dry Kids, the album criss crosses various styles and is eclectic. Really nice ballads, some great rockers and weirdly psychedelic in places (kazoos in one song!). The Love It Takes encapsulates everything great about that album - starts off typically Embrace-like as a slow mournful acoustic ballad, but before we realise it, the song builds and builds into a crescendo of noise and fury and just when I think it has peaked, it keeps on peaking!! The album in general has fantastic guitar work from Richard McNamara, and while Danny has never been the strongest singer, his apparent weakness in that department makes it feel all the more vulnerable and more sincere. But one thing Danny McNamara tops his contemporaries such as Noel, Chris Martin and Fran Healy (who are all similar in some aspects I feel) is his lyrics. Stuff like 'The awful weight I feel around me is your loving arm around me'. Ouch, so vitriolic - and somewhat darkly comedic - it could have been a Morrissey lyric! I really really love this album - it has a song for each and every emotion I feel. Far superior to the overproduced and somewhat hollow debut, and while it isn't as instantly catchy as the highlights on the first album which I listen to more as a quick fix more than anything, this second album slowly crawls under your skin and stays with you forever. Apologies for derailing this thread so I will put it back on course by stating that the album sounds like a b-side album, but in a very good way in that it is often experimental, incredibly eclectic and unusual - and that is often the marker of what I look for in great b-sides and great bands.

nice one, mattwatched the Leeds dvd after posting about them, and the songs, the lyrics, the music, eveything is fucking good. Out Of Nothing is one of the best come back of any band out there... and yeah, the Drawn ron Memory era is pure greatness. From the Love It Takes to to Save Me to the title track to Liar's Tears to I Had A Time... and the couple of rockers completing one of the finest album released around that time. and You're Not Alone... what a fucking single. their b-sides from that album are on spotify... nothing from the first album though..still got them on cd though.. what a time. sad to say I couldnt listen to their 2 (or 3) last records though... that's all changed? thanks for creating this thread, mkoasis. a fucking good read!!

It's a shame. The b-side is almost extinct. Now they are called "bonus" tracks and attached to various iTunes/Amazon releases. That just doesn't sound sexy at all. The beauty of the b-side is that it allowed artists to let their hair down a little and experiment. Sometimes it would result is brilliance. If you notice most of the bands I listed are 20 years old from the golden age of CD singles. Modern bands today just don't bother. Even Coldplay don't really do b-sides anymore.
