Nice track listing, but in terms of Coldplay track listings, I always thought Ghost Stories and A Head Full Of Dreams could do with being merged. Both released within a year of each other which while prolific doesn't exactly make for quality, it would have been preferable to have two bang average ho-hum albums condensed in the same time period to create a genuinely very decent pop album. Think of the concept, the sunny and outgoing pop of A Head Full Of Dreams followed by the mellow and introspective songs of Ghost Stories. Stretched over a full album, both are full of fillers but condense the songs into those up beat and mellow tunes into one and you have a fairly coherent album I think.
A Head Full of Ghost Stories
Side 1: Day 1. A Head Full Of Dreams 2. Birds 3. Hymn For The Weekend 4. Adventure of a Lifetime Side 2: Night 6. Midnight 7. All Your Friends 8. Magic 9. Ghost Story Finale 10. Up & Up 11. Fly On
In the words of the great Neil Buchanan, 'try it yerself!'.

Okay, I'll take off Swallowed in the Sea by popular demand, but X&Y without Till Kingdom Come is just dead on arrival in my opinion. That track and Fix You shine out of the album as the only real classics - I remember when I started listening to Coldplay my dad mentioning this acoustic song he loved back when I was a kid. I hadn't heard X&Y yet and assumed he meant Green Eyes - but when I finally found it and played it for him, it was an amazing moment. Gorgeous, gorgeous song: That leaves me with: 1) Square One 2) White Shadows 3) Fix You 4) Talk 5) Speed of Sound 6) A Message 7) The Hardest Part 8) Low 9) Gravity 10) Twisted Logic 11) Till Kingdom Come ...Not bad at all. Maybe I shouldn't be so dismissive of 'Til Kingdom Come'. It's nice enough and I get people liking it so if people have it in their playlist that's cool. Light, country clap-alongs don't do much for me though and I personally don't think they're what the album needs - even if it's tagged onto the end. I feel like 'A Message' would conclude the last 50 minutes of listening though and gives the album a strong thread front to back. If I thought 'Til Kingdom Come' was really strong I'd make an acception but I don't really rate it. It's certainly no classic in book that's for sure. How you could consider the album " dead on arrival" without it sounds very dramatic to me. If I was in charge of signing the album off and was presented with the album as I've arranged it I'd be super happy for the band. Do you not really rate the other tracks? In terms of songs you've excluded 'What If' is undeniably sappy but I think it's well written and I enjoy it more as it goes on. It's less of a downward mood swing when positioned after 'Fix You'. And I don't like the first minute of 'X&Y' but after that I find little to fault. It's really sweet and spacey with a good sense of melody.

Today took a listen to X&Y after almost a decade, half of it is very good, great singles, but overall it's a drab, all sounds bit too samey. Fix You still very cheesy. Do you not think Speed Of Sound is drab? I’ve never liked it and am still shocked at how they thought it was worthy as a single, let alone lead single. And that was my opinion of the band when they released it in 2005 at the age of 14 - drab. I’d never paid full attention to them in all honesty and was familiar with the odd riff, chorus, etc but never invested my time in any one tune. It was only when my twin brother got the album about this time of the year in 2005 that I took a listen. The one tune that really grabbed me and got me in to Coldplay? Talk - always loved that song and the lyrics. Absolutely true! Talk really made me a fan, while i knew the other songs and albums as well. But Talk is one their very, very best songs .Great lyrics and melody ,damn catchy. Violet Hill, Politik and Talk. If i had to pick my three favourite songs. And as someone mentioned above ,Dont Let It Break Your Heart is an superior banger!

I'm on the road, but will elaborate when settled down. Had to interject my tracklist for X&Y with its recent popularity for discussion.
Side X
1. Square One 2. White Shadows 3. Talk 4. Things I Don't Understand 5. Fix You
Side Y
1. Speed Of Sound 2. The World Turned Upside Down 3. Pour Me 4. Low 5. The Hardest Part 6. Gravity + Til Kingdom Come
No same-like songs. Tons of variations. More rockier and less poppy in parts. Still pop, but more cosmic like.

This thread is making me want to listen to their post VLV albums, I have to hear Mylo Xyloto again and also Ghost Stories and AHFOD, these albums are a blur in my head, long time without listen. Ghost Stories is the only one I'd go back to listen too. Take out the awful Sky full of Stars, that just smells of wanting to be "hip" with the younger crowd. That album has some touches of old Coldplay in it. But the other's for me, smell of sell out but other's on here will defend them of course. For me Parachutes to VLV plus the b-sides during those era too, that's the best of Coldplay. still a great live act but unless they come back around with a album that comes close to the first 4 albums then they won't win me around and many others. I don't think they have it in them to do it.

World71R , I agree that ALIENS is fucking incredible, but it suits the Mylo sound an awful lot better and as it was demoed in that period I have it on my MX playlist: 1) Mylo Xyloto 2) Hurts Like Heaven 3) Paradise 4) Charlie Brown 5) Us Against the World 6) M.M.I.X 7) Every Teardrop is a Waterfall 8) Major Minus 9) ALIENS 10) UFO 11) Princess of China 12) Moving to Mars 13) A Hopeful Transmission 14) Don't Let it Break Your Heart 15) Up With the Birds That's a good tracklisting. I'd remove Princess of China, but I understand its inclusion to some degree. The MX era was fantastic, and this proves it.

I wonder why they stopped with the b-sides and bonus material? They use to have fabulous b-sides. Particularly in the AROBTTH era. I agree! Crest of Waves, 1.36, Animals, all fantastic stuff. You could count the Kaleidoscope EP as the bonus material, and they did do some stuff for GS, like Ghost Story and All Your Friends. MX had the Every Teardrop is a Waterfall EP too, with Moving to Mars, and VLV had Prospekt's March, so they haven't been slacking like U2 and Noel have been (Ex: one or two new non-album songs and the rest being remixes), but they haven't been doing the same as they used to.

I'd have cut Ink and True Love in favour of All Your Friends and Ghost Story. Still not a great album but much better.

Birds is a tune. Whenever you can feel the influence of both Guy and Jonny on a track, the quality shoots up - it would have been great if Oasis had a bassist and lead guitarist as talented as them post-2000. Alas...

I'd have cut Ink and True Love in favour of All Your Friends and Ghost Story. Still not a great album but much better. All Your Friends is a good song but doesn't really fit the album IMO. It's so clearly about soldiers and doesn't gel with the album at all - I'd have kept it as a great b-side. Fair point, but I wouldn't mind it if they'd have stepped away a bit more from the thematic concept either. Midnight is arguably an awkward fit on there but it works pretty well.

Birds has one of Guy's basslines in it, and Up&Up and Adventure of a Lifetime both have good basslines and guitar work by Guy and Jonny. AHFOD has its good spots, but then some really awful spots to counter it unfortunately.

Coldplay are up to some shenanigans today. They are pretending to be some new fake band that Parlaphone just "signed" named Los Unidades. We shall see what this is all about.

This thread has more pages than either the 'High Flying Birds Thoughts' or 'Liam Thoughts' threads. Coldplay are provocative. They get the people GOING. Anyway, yeah, Los Unidatos are Coldplay - they liked the tweet and there's a code for the picture which is an anagram of COLDPLAY2018. Some people on fan-forums speculating it could be an album made up of outtakes and lost songs, as Moving to Mars has been taken off their channel and Car Kids (a lost Mylo track) has been registered somewhere. Maybe Lennon2217 will end up with his studio version of Pour Me?

Well this new Coldplay news, single, EP was disappointing. Man the fan theory of it being a collection of unreleased Coldplay songs over the years to tie into their new doc and a thank you to fans along the journey sure sounded way cooler than this. I guess its safe to say the old Coldplay is never ever coming back. I thought Atlas 5-6 years ago was a remote possibility but it passed like a fart in the wind. Instead of looking inward they continue to just find pop stars to collaborate with. Nothing wrong with that but it is just so so far away from the band I fell in love with. My relationship with the band now mirrors Chris' thoughts on his own divorce. 'It's funny. I don't think about that word very often- divorce. I don't see it that way. I see it more like you meet someone, you have some time together and things just move through. I've lived a lot of life since then.'
