I got a $25 iTunes card this past week, and bought A Head Full of Dreams, Birds, and Adventure of a Lifetime (didn't purchase Up&Up since I already bought it) on Saturday. I looked back there today, and iTunes put up an offer to buy the rest of the album for $1.81, but I just could not take it. There's about one other song worth getting from the rest of the bunch (Everglow), and that's about it. Otherwise, it's just a whole lot of meh-to-bad stuff, and filler, left to be had, which makes me think that this album was rushed too much to get it out while GS was still fresh in everyone's minds. On the bright side, I have to say that Major Minus is a great tune. It's like a futuristic/Mylo-ified version of Spies, and I love the way the guitars sound on it. Easily one of Coldplay's most rocking and overlooked songs imo. Looking back, Mylo Xyloto isn't the terrible album most Coldplay fans used to consider it. AHFOD really puts things into perspective. Hurts Like Heaven, Paradise, Charlie Brown, Every Teardrop is a Waterfall, Major Minus, Don't Let it Break Your Heart, and Up With the Birds are all good tunes, and UFO/Us Against the World do their job as "we-still-remember-Parachutes-I-swear!" songs. Even Princess of China doesn't do too badly until a minute and half in, when it loses all structure. Combine the instrumentals with the succeeding tracks, change the tracklist a bit and it would be pretty good: 1. Hurts Like Heaven 2. Paradise 3. Charlie Brown 4. Every Teardrop is a Waterfall 5. Major Minus 6. U.F.O 7. Princess of China (Rewritten, NO RIHANNA) 8. Us Against the World 9. Moving to Mars 10. Don't Let it Break Your Heart 11. Up With the Birds Still, whatever you do to it, it will always be a major creative step back from Viva. Following that album, Coldplay once again ruled the world. They had all the studio equipment and the biggest budget conciveable. They had gained critical respect, enjoyed rejuvanated popularity, and had proved they could change their sound effectively. They could have worked with pretty much anyone they wanted, and the possibilities were endless. To make a formulaic glittery pop album - positively neon though it is - was a real cop out, and the less said about their choice of collaborator the better. Like I said earlier, Mylo and X&Y get a bit too much flak. In my world X&Y >>>>>>> Mylo but still the band were putting these kind of tunes on their albums: Hurts Like Heaven Charlie Brown Every Teardrop is a Waterfall Major Minus Don't Let It Break Your Heart ...and Moving to Mars was cut! Should've been on the album. When you look back, Ghost Stories looks like Coldplay finally playing it safe and unfortunately you get blandness, and AHFOD is them selling out to commercial pop and crappy hip hop influences (not the right ones). I mean when my favorite track from the new record is the U2 tribute band sounding title track, there's a problem. Mylo and X&Y need to be remixed completely. Under all that over production are even better tunes.

Man did this band fall from grace worse than Satan. Like what the heck happened to them? Went for the quick buck instead of actually wanting to challenge their audience sadly and jumped onto any popular bandwagon that came along in music. For me I put Coldplay in two boxes MK 1 and MK 2 MK 1- (2000-2008) a top live act, with possibly two of the best albums of 2000's in AROBTTH and VIVA LA VIDA, Parachutes is a excellent record too and X & Y great moments outshine its weak ones. A top band that were undervalued by the critic's and the haters. MK 2 (2011-2016) No risk taking sell outs, who will jump on the bandwagon of any fly by night pop star just to keep themselves in the limelight. Chris Martin turning into a fame whore. Still have some bright moments here and there. I doubt they care as long as their bank balance fills up. It's amazing many years ago they were really liked Glastonbury headliners, no one would complain about them. Now people are in uproar about them been at Glastonbury, which shows how far their star has fallen with a Indie/Rock crowd. Shame they were once a top class band.

So Coldplay finally got to #1 in the UK with this album. Expect more shit albums like this going forward. I was hoping not achieving a #1 album by a pure pop album would shake them to their core. I was wrong. Lets be honest they could fart through a mic and Coldplay's albums would get to number 1, although this one seems to not have done well as the others have. Someone must be enjoying their new stuff sadly. I didn't even know they released a new album.

I actually like the production on Mylo, with the exceptions of Hurts Like Heaven and Us Against the World which were - as one reviewer put it - polished until they bled. On the rest, it sounds great to me - really immersive and textural while being colourful and energetic too. The intro to Charlie Brown is gorgeous and all the little echoes and reverbs on Don't Let it Break Your Heart are great. On the other hand, X&Y was produced horrifically IMO. It tries to blag it as spacey and epic when the songs don't warrant it, and so it all sounds very laboured and forced - especially compared to the powerful, stark power of A Rush of Blood to the Head. Some songs like Square One or Speed of Sound are ok (I actually think Speed of Sound needs to be spacier to make it less of an obvious re-release of Clocks, and Square One just can't make itself epic enough) but Talk, A Message, Low etc are just simple rock songs that don't license messianic echoes and needless vocal layering.

Hurts Like Heaven (after you hear Chris's piano demo of it) definitely didn't need all the production it got on the record. Don't Let It Break Your Heart and Charlie Brown are great, but there's way too much going on in them. I actually blame Eno for his 'enoxification; efforts on Mylo: kind of made the songs seem a bit bigger than they should've been. One of the great achievements of AROBTTH was the ominous production by Nelson: the tunes didn't feel grand but felt down to Earth and soared at the right moments, while Parachutes has that warmth to it. X&Y is a proper rock album but became overdone with those multi-layered guitar and synth tracks.

Yeah, I agree MX isn't that bad. Compared to AHFOD it's a Grammy award winning record. I could listen to MX and not want to tear my ears out.
Anyway, I see Coldplay are now headlining Glastonbury on the Sunday.

A Head Full Of Wet Dreams
A concept album about Chris Martin going through puberty. Amazingly, sounds way more enticing than everything about A Head Full Of Dreams.

A Head Full of Wet Dreams Part Two: The Realisation 1. Maybe I'll Call Gwyneth Paltrow 2. Or Perhaps Jennifer Lawrence 3. Tove Lo, However, Is An Up-and-Coming Star (So to Speak) 4. Actually, Rihanna's Looking Good These Days 5. Now I Think About It, Beyoncé's My Best Bet Maybe just a few reasons why he doesn't make sad music anymore.

The overproduction has caused me the most distress with them, its far too clean for me which makes it bland. It's the lack of risk taking with their music, they might throw a Midnight for example onto Ghost Stories but it feels like to me like they are trying to be edgy rather then them actually believing in it. It feels like their glory to be universally loved is far more important then their artistic vision. For me sadly at the end of the day they peaked early as a creative force, Viva la Vida was their last true statement of intent after that it's got extremely patchy.

I've seen plenty of people moaning but that's purely because they don't like them and it's their fourth time headlining, there's been nothing like the seethe when Kanye was announced last year

" Well, it was nice enough of them to open up for Beyoncé, wasn’t it?" Noel Gallagher says, deadpan, in his distinct Mancunian accent. It’s a few days after the Super Bowl, and the former Oasis leader is poking fun at Coldplay, whose “headline” half-time show performance was overshadowed by Beyoncé (and Bruno Mars). Gallagher is talking with Tone Deaf over the phone from London but you can still detect a sly grin starting to form as he opens his mouth. “ I was saying to Chris [Martin], ‘you’re a very nice guy to do that (give up the limelight) for Beyoncé,” he says, dripping with sarcasm, “At the fucking Superbowl! You’re a lovely man.'” source: www.tonedeaf.com.au/471743/noel-gallagher-relives-his-best-worst-aussie-tour-experiences.htm

They are pretty much a staple but it's the first time I've seen people shit on it. It make no difference really but it be interesting to see the crowd reaction to them this year. It wouldn't surprise me if they had a set list that just consist of the first 4 albums, that pop stuff they be doing over the last three albums won't go down to well at Glastonbury.

Yeah, them having headlined 3 times before is one of the main reasons the people who are complaining are doing so. Coldplay have always had their haters but I think the majority of people see that they're a huge band and therefore a good booking, with the only real complaint being that they've done it so many times before. The last time they played Glastonbury they played 4 or 5 unreleased songs off Mylo Xyloto so they're hardly going to be scared to play any new songs there, it'll be a similar setlist to the one on the tour and as usual they'll get a huge crowd and go down really well.

I fully expect to hear Paradise, A Sky Full of Stars, Adventure of a Lifetime and Up&Up. Charlie Brown, Every Teardrop, A Head Full of Dreams and Amazing Day are all the cards too. Out of those, the only ones I would welcome are Paradise, Charlie Brown, Every Teardrop and Up&Up. If they make solid decisions, they're still very much capable of an absolutely killer setlist though and whatever you think of their music, you can't deny their ability to put on a show. Unless, of course, whatever talentless pop star Chris fancies this week turns up.

I saw them during the Viva la Vida tour and they were immense to be fair, aside from the horrid Wham Last Christmas cover they did. It really is massively important they get that set list right, they aren't playing in front of a Coldplay crowd. I do agree they will throw in a lot of their new stuff, a massive mistake cause it will go down like a wet fart. You will get a few appearances from a few flash by night pop stars and they might throw in a old rocker to get over with the crowd. It be interesting how they go down this year, remember they are coming off their worst album to date critical and a bit of the backlash is coming on strong.

I found Chris Martin saying "I remember our first NME Awards, we were sitting at Bring Me the Horizon's table over there next to the big band" in his acceptance speech quite funny. Bring Me the Horizon don't come out of this very well, imagine being that rattled by Coldplay.
