I found this pic on Instagram and it's the first time I have seen it. I'm sure some of you guys have before. The poster says it's from September of 1992. Noel playing Fender Jaguar it looks like. This got me thinking that if you have or know of any early Oasis pics you could put them here.

Oh my, Bonehead is playing on a Fender Stratocaster, this must be really old

I have a hard time believing that they are both real Fender guitars, or if they are, they are someone else's. I doubt Noel dumped a Fender Jaguar for an Epiphone Les Paul.

Sorry for the necro, but was interested in any early pics too!

UpTown Magazine Photoshoot Manchester, UK Autumn 1991Notes: This is the band's first ever photoshoot. Liam would have been 19 years old and Noel 24. Noel would've only just have joined the band at this point. Some more photos from this photoshoot are visible in Kate Arthurs scrapbook but they're far too small to be seen in any real detail.

Canal Cafe Bar, Manchester, UK 14 September 1993Notes: Guigsy is playing a black Fender Jazz Bass, Bonehead a sunburst Epiphone Riviera (with no vibrato) and Noel a Gibson or Epiphone Les Paul Standard. Haven't authenticated these yet but there are two more on the Manchester Digital Music Archive dated to 1993: www.mdmarchive.co.uk/gfx/14280/HiRes-1.jpgwww.mdmarchive.co.uk/gfx/14279/HiRes-1.jpgTony looking pretty cool in that first one.

King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, Glasgow, UK 31 May 1993Notes: Some of the footage in the video below isn't from this gig. It's difficult to see who's playing what but it seems Bonehead is playing a black Stratocaster, Guigsy a black Fender Jazz Bass and Noel some kind of Epiphone Riviera looking guitar.
The Boardwalk, Manchester, UK Mid 1993
Notes: Commonly misdated to 1992. Noel is playing a sunburst Epiphone Les Paul, Bonehead a sunburst Epiphone Riviera (minus vibrato) and Guigsy a Gibson Les Paul Triumph Bass.

Edit: A better version of one of the pictures courtesy of Mary McGuigan (Guigsy's sister): This is very interesting. I wonder if that ticket is from a different Rain show at the Boardwalk. It clearly shows the date as January 6, 1992. However, most sources put the date of the first gig with Noel at the Boardwalk on January 14th. The question is whether or not the ticket pictured is from the first gig with Noel or a gig the week previously without him. Either way, very interesting!

I believe that the Rain didn't even play a gig with Liam until August 1991, so 1992 should be the correct year for that picture/ticket/gig with Noel.

If it is a 6, then yes, that ticket must be from 1991, as the 6th was a Sunday (and the ticket has "SUN" printed on it). It would make sense that Mary would probably keep the ticket from her brother's first gig, not necessarily the one with Noel (how would she know at the time that would be something meaningful?). Either way, I think that it confirms that the ticket has nothing to do with the picture that it was displayed with.

I forgot to mention but the fact the act is billed as 'The Rain' also tells us it's from 1991 as Uptown magazine tells us they had been known as Oasis for a number of months already. I don't know when The Rain's first performance was but yeah, Mary would most likely have stuff related to Guigsy. It's quite misleading but the photograph and the ticket aren't related. The photo is from the 12th September 1992 when the band we're playing at The Venue.

Mary recently said on Twitter that the name change happened on the way to a gig in Liverpool after it was discovered that another band on the bill was also called the "Rain". However, no additional details were provided about when this gig was. Is there any evidence that they played outside of Manchester before Noel joined? If there is, that would help pin down if the name change happened before Noel joined. I've heard Noel say in interviews that the band had already changed the name before he joined, but we know that his memory is spotty at best, he says things that may not be 100% true to help the mythology and who knows what he considers as when he "joined" the band (for all we know, he doesn't feel that he was in full time until he was fired by the Inspirals at the end of 1992).

That's new to me. I don't know of a Liverpool gig but the information we have is extremely sparse. Noel joining after the name change seems to check out: 18 August 1991: The band played a gig at The Boardwalk. Later that week the band featured in a small article in the Manchester Evening News published on the 23rd. The band were named by the journalist as "Oasis" and the article contains the following excerpt: " Watch out for local band Oasis to change all this, they played the Boardwalk last week to an audience full of local pop luminaries including the Inspiral Carpets." According to Hewitt's book this is the gig Noel first saw his brothers band. Autumn 1991: The band record at Out of the Blue Studios, Manchester, UK. Noel Gallagher is listed as "rhythm" on the insert card of the resulting demo tape but according to Tony McCarroll he wasn't present at the session. Noel's interview with Uptown Magazine implies he was at the session but it's far from conclusive. All of the songs are written by Liam and Bonehead. 22 October 1991: The band (named as Oasis) featured in an article in Uptown Magazine published on this date. Noel is named as one of the guitarists and is interviewed with the rest of the band. The band (Noel included) take part in a photoshoot for the article.

Cheers! Provided the Autumn 1991 timeframe is accurate for the demo I believe the name change would be bounded the 18 Aug 91 gig.
