1997, the year Oasis tanked and the year Travis burst onto the scene.
Within 2 years though or more, they had become a boring record label meandering band.
Here they are with Noel Gallagher in 1997 when even he thought they would go onto bigger things.
He was wrong, and so were Travis.
Good song though. Perhaps Noel should produce their next album, like with The Libertines. Lets hope so.

I've always like Travis, still think all their albums still hold water well. They're a great band, great live too.
But I think your thread will be moved to the Other Music section.

Move it I don't care. But I think Noel could have a good influence on Travis. He wants to produce the Libertines next album so why not Travis as well. Anyway, this is one of the most exciting posts yet to be out on here.

Well, Travis may have started out musically similar, but now they've become something much softer and more atmospheric than Oasis ever were. This is probably due to working with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. They still make amazing music, even if it's not as great as The Man Who, and quite frankly, I'd rather listen to Travis' weaker, more recent material than most of what Oasis put out in the 00's.

Although Oasis's peaks are higher in the 2000s than Travis, their troughs are most definitely way way worse than anything Travis have ever done - and sadly, there are waaaay too many troughs for my liking in latter Oasis. Travis - without being earth shattering - have always been consistently brilliant. Their last album they released in 2013 (Where You Stand) is still given regular spins by myself and Fran Healy's solo album is brilliant too (even if it is identical to Travis, but that's expected!). I don't understand how Oasis fans could hate Travis to be honest - Fran Healy and Noel Gallagher both have the same approach to songwriting where the melody is the most important thing to them and where the songs are fairly conventionally structured too. It's unashamed and lacks any pretension whatsoever - they are your typical, classic songwriters. I think the petty hatred of Travis is purely down to the image and sound - modest guys who don't seek the limelight and their music is stripped back with a singer whose vocals are very pretty and lyrics are, for the most part, sincere. But strip Oasis songs right down to their bare minumum and they would garner the same reaction - the only difference between Oasis and Travis is the latter didn't turn up the amps to 11 while spouting foul language in a blizzard of cocaine. And, as a matter of fact, Travis have actually delved into far more hard hitting subjects than Oasis ever did in their songs - their 2003 album 12 Memories focuses on domestic abuse, depression and war (which was of the political climate at the time with Iraq). So basically, it's just a misguided perception of the band. They're a very special band to me because the first single I ever bought was as a 10 year old in summer 2001 and it was Sing. My entire music collection is built upon that very song, and listening to their melodic well crafted tunes at that age pretty much directed me towards Oasis.

Their first album is good. Second one is disappointing but at least has some okay tunes on it. But then they became a bit unexciting. Their second album was so successful they just kept copying it, same with their first one too, Ode to OJ Smith.
They haven't done anything new in ages. Owen Morris never produced a record for them, maybe that was the problem.
They are way to dismal for me, but at least they can write a somewhat listenable song. Still boring though.
Not sure about some of their B Sides, they might be worth finding.

For me Travis really started to lose their footing around 2003-2004. Around the time of 12 Memories. Now they tend to make songs and albums that sound too similar.

Haven't paid attention to them since 12 Memories (even though I love that record), but I can't imagine them ever making a bad record. They stole the show when I saw them open for Oasis in Berkeley on the SOTSOG tour.

I saw them live last year and it was a great show. They did an acoustic song in the audience that was just amazing. Fran has so much energy. They aren't Oasis and aren't trying to be.

They need to beef up their guitars more, and make a rock album to save their career before they go into the studio and record an entire album called "Crickets at 1am"

They haven't been big since the early 2000s, so I don't think their focused too much on relevance. They've still got a loyal fanbase and their live performances still blow most acts out the water - I think they're doing alright. They did make a rock album - their debut, and it's their worst album. Not every band needs to 'beef up the guitars'. I think, along with most folk, they're perfectly capable without doing that.

Yes but when they were big. They were not at their best. I think their best albums was 2003 and 2007 albums, along with their first two which were quite popular.
My favorite though of course was their first record..no ballads just rocknroll type songs, and its those kind of songs which they promised at the start but then they turned into a mundane band with mundane songs.
I guess they have their charms but I think they are capable of much more.

Like this one.

I got that album. Thought it was boring. If it was copying Oasis album that was probably a good thing anyway. But they weren't the only ones to do that. Maybe I'll get around to listening to it again properly. And seeing them for the hidden geniuses they are. I'll say one thing though, they are WAY better than Coldplay. If Travis were bigger and more popular than Coldplay are and have been - or apparently are. The world would be a much better place. Never understood Coldplay they are like Radiohead....for meandering thinking people it seems. Just got worse and worse all the time. They show promise for a few records...but then you realize you should of known better. And what about the Darkness?....... I'd love to hear a record from these guys sometime though.

Travis were fantastic. What happened? They seemed to disappear after The Boy with No Name (which was a solid record, by the way).

Where You Stand, released in 2013, was a really good record. Seen them at the Barrowlands a year or so ago for like the 20th time and they were as good as they have ever been. Working on their new album as we speak. Should be out this year.

He's one of my favourite singers - even Elton John thinks so - and he's one of the very rare instances of someone with a great voice who is yet to decline.
