That was actually a pretty good review, up until they made the damned Beatles comparison. According to them, all rock that is on the edge of being pop is Beatlesque..

Rock de Lux, probably the most influential music magazine in Spain, has reviewed the album in its April issue. They are VERY snob and have been very negative with all things related to Oasis (think Drowned in Sound, Pitchfork).
Review is quite positive. I would attach it, but it seems it is not longer possible to include attachments. The reviewer says the album is "uneven" and that 'The Mexican' is 'old rock in the vein of the worse Lenny Kravitz', but also says 'I would say it is the best thing he has released in almost 20 years', and cites as highlights: Riverman, TRS ('both take you to an undefined or imagined 60's illusion'), YKYCGB ('an addictive indie-pop stomper like he had not written in years') and TBOTMI ('touches the sky with the complicity of an inspired Johnny Marr')

Surprise Surprise 9:50 To be fair on him, he's not scathing about it, it's merely that this album just doesn't get to him in the way it does for most of us and it's not like he's a bitter Oasis hater - who he says he prefers. I've said here before, but I've echoed some of his concerns - sonically it could be better - I.e. I think X Ray Eyes and Lock All The Doors, as decent as they are, it's just musically dull and take the vocals away and there is absolutely nothing of intrigue going on in those tunes.

Kinda funny how that dude from theneedledrop has become a legit critic, well at least for a casual ADD Youtube person. I personally don't like his videos at all (a little too nerdy, really really lame gimmicks, pseudo intellectual), but every so often he'll have something okay to say. Really can't respect him for saying that there's bits of Britpop in here. Britpop has been dead for nearly 20 years and post-britpop for a decade. Noel still writes songs that are uniquely his but saying they are britpop is just plain lazy. Lock All The Doors is really the only thing that I could imagine hearing in the mid 90s, You Know We Can't Go Back is more of a Killers tune than a Supergrass one. I really don't understand how anyone thinks that CY is safe or that the songwriting is weaker than the first.
The first HFB's album features some solid, if not an unspectacular set of songs. It's a good record, but I'd say CY is a great one. HFB got a little bloated and stale with regards to the songwriting and production. Noel dressing up a lot of his kink-esque songs. CY has so many for flavors to it. First off CY has The Right Stuff which stands up with anything Noel has ever done and is probably the most creative thing he's done sonically since Gas Panic. Riverman is one of his most complete songs in his discography. The Dying of the Light sits right next to Don't Go Away as the best Wonderwall-esque song that he has written. Ballad Of The Mighty I is sublime in terms of production and the melody is one of the most interesting in Noel's catalog. In The Heat Of The Moment features a classic Noel melody with some new disco vibes. If Blur did The Girl With X-Ray Eyes, I think critics would have ate it up. The Mexican, Lock All The Doors, and You Know We Can't Go Back are all solid rockers/anthems. While The Song Remains The Same is probably the most underrated track on the album. Classic Noel songwriting with some really interesting production.
Noel is inspired. He hasn't written an outright shit song in over a decade and CY has something on it for pretty much anyone. Kinda feel bad for people that don't like it and I laugh at the critics who say this is the "same old Noel Gallagher," because if you've been following him over the course of his career you'd know that CY sticks out from the rest of his work.

Brilliant post. Totally agree. I didn't manage to read the entire Guardian review, it was total and utter bullshit.

I think the 'Needle Drop guy' gets a bad rap from a lot of people who all too often throw there arms into the air and brand him a hipster because he didn't love that record you loved. I genuinely believe he's a pretty smart bloke who often puts a lot of things into perspective and often raises some pretty interesting points. My only real criticism of him is his frequent need for some kind of 'edge' to an artists work. A loud/passionate/experimental record is always going to out perform an ever mellowing, safe-rock one in his eyes.
