Obviously, Oasis were never a metal band. But I was having a chat with my mate about how the guys from Metallica dig Oasis and we were wondering whether any Oasis songs could be considered metal.
We agreed that My Big Mouth was the closest Oasis got to metal. But can it, or any other Oasis songs, be considered metal?

Depends what you mean as 'Metal'. They certainly didn't get anywhere near becoming a Heavy Metal band for example but I think the Fuckin' In The Bushes riff is very Zeppelin-esque.
I know Metallica (or specifically Lars) loves Oasis, as does Marylin Manson but I don't think that's because they sound anything like Metal it's more their broad musical taste. Likewise Noel really loves Pink Floyd and more specifically The Wall but I can't imagine him writing a semi-autobiographical rock opera album, stage show and film anytime soon.
People listen and write completely different music

They're closer to riverdance than metal.
Ps Full On is closer to metal than My Big Mouth
Pps technically Helter Skelter would be the closest they got

Metallica hasn't been metal in 25 years.

What do you mean by metal? Alternative metal (Queens of the Stone Age, Stone Temple Pilots, Deftones, Nirvana), classical metal (AC/DC/Metallica/LZ), or heavy metal (Static-X)?
Oasis were closer to alternative metal at times than anything else. Never were close to becoming a true metal band I think.

The closest Oasis has been to metal is when they covered Helter Skelter which some consider the initiation of Heavier Rock.
Thanks

I could picture Turn Up The Sun being recorded with sort of a light metal-esque vibe. Same with Better Man.
However, I've long considered Full On to be the Helter Skelter of Oasis.
Probably more, but these are the ones that come to my head.

I can't speak about the other two, but QOTSA and Nirvana are definitely not 'Alternative Metal'. 'Alternative Rock' is the loose fitting genre you're looking for. Oasis never even came close to doing anything remotely metal like. 'Hard Rock', 'Punk Rock', 'Classic Rock', 'Baggie' and 'Krautrock' are all hinted at at various points in their career, but 'metal'... definitely not. Distortion does not equal metal.

Full on is the heaviest track. A thrashy vibe can be found in I can see a liar... bring it on down...
Fade in out intro at gmex 97 has a heavy feel. But it's just a brief moment. Anyone can do it with distortion and droped D tuning...

Oasis spirit is a joyful, hedonist, and "don't give a fuck" celebration of life. Those bands, metal bands, are in touch with more obscure sides of existence.

I always think 'The Nature Of Reality' was the closest they ever got! I'm glad they didn't!

There is so much overlap with genres you could easily put the same band into several genres. For example Deftones, QOTSA, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana and Oasis all appear in the 'Alternative Rock List': en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_alternative_rock_artistsSome bands fit better into certain musical definitions, and I'm certain Nirvana and QOTSA fit much better with the definition of 'Alternative Rock'.
