Moonage Daydream. Full Stop. It'd have to be up there no doubt, the verses with the "I'm an alligator! I'm a mama-papa coming for you!" is classic Bowie from that period and the choruses certainly are impressive

Bowie was the man in the 70's, I know Stevie Wonder was up there producing classic after classic and Sex Pistols did leave their mark. But the 70's belonged to Bowie, he is the equal of the Beatles for me, yeah he's had a right few stinkers but alone for his 70's and early 80's work he's greatest solo performer Britain's every produced bar none.

Without a doubt I'd agree on him being him being the greatest solo performer Britain's produced, but on the 70s belonging to Bowie, what about Led Zeppeling?

I just give Bowie the nod for changing his style but Zeppelin were the band of the 70's, they were the biggest band in the world bar none. I always find it strange when the papers say Oasis were the biggest British Band since The Beatles back in the 90's, bloody Zeppelin were selling Records by the millions especially in the States.

Best list I've seen so far! :-) Gonna try to compile my own top 10 tomorrow... Thank you. Looking forward to see your list. This turned out to be more work than actually I'm willing to invest, so from the top of my head: :-) My Bloody Valentine - Sometimes Joy Division - Transmission Doves - There Goes The Fear R.E.M. - Perfect Circle The Fall - The Classical Sonic Youth - The Diamond Sea The Jam - Going Underground Van Morrison - Sweet Thing XTC - Making Plans For Nigel Pulp - Do You Remember The First Time? The La's - Timeless Melody Yeah, it's 11 as well. New Order and about 683 bands/songs should have been in there, too. Nevermind. I especially liked the (not so obvious) late 70's/80's-indie/post-punk stuff you included. I mean it's quite easy and obvious to go for the likes of Hendrix/Beatles/Stones/Who/Pistols/Bowie/Velvets/Floyd/Kinks. Although I love all of them. Well except for anything prog-rock and most of Hendrix's later output. Too much masturbation. Anyway, The Zombies are great too! I had Odessey and Oracle on CD lying around untouched and unheard for a very long time until I finally put it on late last year. It didn't leave my stereo for weeks, criminally underrated I must say!

They might mean biggest British band IN BRITAIN as opposed to just biggest British band. It's like Coldplay, they can sell records by the bucket loads in the US which Oasis never could, but in the Britain, they're not half as big. Same thing with U2

Great list as well. "Odessey and Oracle" is a timeless classic. Have you watched "Control" by Anton Cobijn? It's sad, but "Transmission" sounds like if it was written for the ending scene of the film. I don't know if you ever heard of The Veils, but the singer and the front man of the band is the son of the keyboard player from XTC. The Veils sound like much more "Alternative" than XTC, but still a good band.

The Veils sound like much more "Alternative" than XTC, but still a good band. I'm not too fond of Control, to be honest. Never liked those feature film biopics on musicians in general, as they tend to simplify history. I much prefer 24 Hour Party People, if just for its pure hilariousness. Joy Division surely have written a lot of songs that could potentially soundtrack (mostly unhappy) "endings". But I think Transmission actually makes an exception in the JD catalogue. Musically it's propulsive and upbeat, and contrary to most other Curtis' works, I find the lyrics to Transmission to be almost positive and life-affirming. It's kind of meta-music. A song about being lost in music that in itself manages to draw you in. Love the intro with the distant synths, and then Peter Hook enters with his incredible bass figure. So powerful. Yeah, I know The Veils. Been listening to some of their stuff, well, must have been like 9 to 10 years ago. Never heard or read anything of them since. Kinda vanished from the spotlight.
