Since we are talking about. How would you rate Coldplay's catalog?
Parachutes - 9/10 A Rush of Blood to the Head - 8.5/10 X&Y - 5.5/10 Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends - 7.5/10 Mylo Xyloto: 4/10
If you average it Coldplay comes out to be 6.9/10. I'd say they are a solidly good band. Their first two are their best (hmmm kinda like who else? Oasis, Strokes, The Killers, KOL, Weezer, etc.). Those two are essential listens. X & Y is kinda like their BHN (I prefer BHN's coke vibes to subpar U2 imitations.). Viva has aged very well. I can't believe that album is 6 years old. It's a surprisingly consistent album and the most enjoyable album in an "album" sense that they have (phew albums...). Mylo Xyloto is the only Coldplay album I only have parts of. That pretty much sums up my feelings on it.

If you're the type of person who measures the worth of Coldplay's music by its similarity to Parachutes then I dare say it's time you stop listening to them.
To their credit, they're not that band any more.

Parachutes 9/10 Rush of Blood 8/10 X&Y It's too samey to me to listen in a one sitting. Square one and twisted logic are the only ones that I remember(besides the singles) VLV 6/10 MX 7/10 But It would be better without paradise and the rihanna song.

My personal ratings of Coldplay albums is as follows:
1. Parachutes: 8/10 - Love the dark, more mellow sides of this debut. A simple, yet direct production. The promise for more was on this record.
2. A Rush of Blood To The Head: 9/10 - I absolutely love every tune on this album with the exception of "A Whisper". I'd rather they put "One I Love" or "Crest of Waves" over it. Fantastic singles. It also contains my favorite Coldplay song "Amsterdam".
3. X&Y: 7/10 - To me this was Coldplay's Be Here Now. They ascended to the top of the world it seemed on Rush of Blood, now they had success and critical acclaim, time to deal with it. Very spotty at times with some cliche tunes towards the end. My highlights: Square One, Fix You, A Message, Low, Till Kingdom Come. I even really like Speed of Sound despite it being almost a carbon copy of "Clocks".
4. Viva La Vida: 8/10 - Excellent production as expected from the Brian Eno/Markus Dravs duo. Singles were all pretty good too. I only wish they used the vocal version of "Life In Technicolor" on this release. Such a superb tune!
5. Mylo Xyloto: 6/10 - This is the sound of a band trying to do too much, trying to please too many and attempting to be a band who they were not. On the flip side it has so many damn catchy tunes: Hurts Like Heaven, Paradise, Charlie Brown, Us Against The World, Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, Major Minus.

Mylo Xyloto do have some very good moments but I don' think I'll ever recover from Princess of China. Can't even explain how much they lost my respect after this song. It was just unbelievable. This new song sounds pretty dense and unexpected but let's see. Won't keep my hopes up.

Parachutes 9/10 AROBTHH - 10/10 X&Y -7/10 (don't think this album is as bad as it's haters have you believe, I think it falters near the end but the first 8 tracks are great) Viva la Vida- 9/10 (another album that gets a lot of slack but I think it's probably their most beautiful album, strawberry Swing and Lovers in Japan are two of the best songs the band ever written) Mylo Xyloto 5/10- I can't defend this as it's certainly them wanting to tap into the pop world and they lose a bit of their soul, probably their weakest album. Although I have to say I love Charlie Brown and Paradise)
I can see why Coldplay rub some up the wrong way but for me I put them up with Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Muse and Radiohead as one of UK best band of the last 20 years. Chris martin deserves his place in that songwriter canon along with Noel Gallagher, Tom Yorke, Richard Ashcroft, Alex turner etc.... Plus they can stand up and say they are the biggest band in the World. they did everything (number 1's in the States and worldwide, selling out stadiums). Plus I have to say they are one of the best live acts I ever seen, Martin is really a top frontman. I actually like where there new stuff is going, seems like its going to be the heartbreak album seen as Martin split with Paltrow.

But I agree with X&Y been their BHN, A bit OTT but underrated and not as bad as the legend has you believe.

I just made that comparison because MX and HC was the lowest point of both bands, that's all...

Considering how annoying it must have been to be married to Gwyneth Paltrow, I expect Chris Martin and co to draw upon this and release a heavy metal album.

Nah a dub step rap metal album with the usual ballad thrown in to keep the females happy. With Paltrow jamming playing congas. It's a classic already.

It definitely seemed like a cold relationship the entire 11-12 years. They never spoke of each other to the press. They never really appeared at events together. She is always busy shooting movies. He is always recording and touring. Not sure when they were really together. She does however still look good. Great body.
