As Someone said before, Nirvana weren't around long enough to release average albums. But its hard to say who was bigger.
If you judge them on those 3-4 years i'd say Oasis were bigger, at a point in time they were probably the biggest/best in the world.
Had Nirvana been around till today, IMO they would have released some average albums too as most bands do (even the best) and it would still have been pretty even

I suppose it depends on whether the grunge scene would have lasted, had Nirvana & Curbain been around and were able to release more albums? ?

Nirvana was absolutely crushing it from 1991-1994. Oasis dominated from 1994 to 1998. The difference when it comes down to it is Oasis had a lackluster second chapter. Nirvana was never seen to have lost it because Cobain left us way too soon so their musical legacy remains intact with no duds or average albums. Even today in America, young teenagers LOVE Nirvana and they weren't even born when the band were active. I guess it would be the same with Oasis over in the UK. Both were massive in their own time. Agree.... on another note usually not many oasis fans are Nirvana fans and vise-versa. Trust me I know, many Oasis fans gave me crap being a fan of Nirvana.

very similar in terms of hugeness. I'd say Oasis had more of a cultural impact but Nirvana has more of a legacy because of Kurt's death. America especially adores Nirvana, often looked upon as the last great rock band. I honestly prefer pavement, sonic youth, and a handful 90s other bands over Nirvana but Nirvana like Oasis was able to transcend their indie audience.
I don't know about the rest of the world, but in America this question, well isn't really a question. Pretty sure Nirvana would win.

Here in Argentina, Nirvana are way more popular than Oasis. Actually Oasis are seen as a couple of pricks, big-mouthed, that write pussy ballads.
However, Nirvana's popularity is mostly related to teenagers. There are a lot of grunge cover bands, while none of britpop. On the other hand, you can find casual Oasis listeners that are +25 years old, but that's harder for Nirvana I guess. Oasis have a more "mature" musical offer. Nirvana is teenager anarchist wrath, while Oasis has ballads, acoustic sets, classic rock, anthems, etc.
I guess that, being fair, Nirvana had a larger legacy because they will always be popular among teenagers, way more than Oasis.
On the other hand, Oasis sold more albums (3 first albums vs 3 first albums). It would be nice to have statistics on gig attendance of every band. Nirvana played a lot of gigs, but in small venues. Oasis were rock stadium. Huge.
One last thing to take into account: Nirvana were born in a country 3 or 4 times bigger than the UK. Of course this will bias any statistic in favour of nirvana. If we think in relative terms, Oasis were much bigger.

How many songs can the general public name compared to Oasis? Never been a big fan of Nirvana but to answer your question. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit Oasis - Wonderwall Agreed that those songs are the first to come to mind when the band is mentioned, but if you played a heap of Oasis songs to someone and a heap of Nirvana songs to someone, they'd probably recognise more Oasis songs, even if they're not exactly sure what the name is or where they heard it.

If we’re talking at their prime then Oasis for me. In 95/97 they were on a level hardly been since before or since by anyone!
In terms of retrospectively and legacy I’d say they’re fairly even if not Nirvana just shading it perhaps but that is because of the tragic circumstance which meant they finished during their peak whereas Oasis managed to lose their magic and mystique
If Oasis has bowed out after Knebworth it’d have been a no contest

In Australia Nirvana are much more popular than Oasis. General public would only really know Oasis and DLBIA and with a few more people knowing Morning Glory, Champagne Supernova and Roll With It.

Do people really know more than say, Smells Like Teen Spirit and Come As You Are, with a few more knowing Lithium and Heart-Shaped Box? Maybe I'm wrong and Nirvana are just unusually popular in Australia, but my sense is that the two bands are basically equivalent.

That guy had serious depression and substance abuse issues. I do think nirvana were bigger. Oasis were huge at their height, no question. However, it’s the nirvana designs that are on T-shirt’s all over the world and not oasis. Then again I guess it depends how you measure success or influence.

Kurt won this battle when he killed himself. I don´t know which band have more hardcore fans but everybody or almost everybody knows Kurt and Nirvana.

About the topic, bigger band?
Def Oasis
Most popular in their prime time?
Nirvana...
But hey Nirvana ended in 94. They never had time to stay in the top.
It's like we discuss in 2029 if Oasis were still relevant in 2009 when they broke up.
