I only became aware of Nirvana when I was about 14, having only been three years old when Nevermind was released. I'm from the UK too, and I have no idea how much they permeated the mainstream media/consciousness here. I suppose it's hard to compare when they weren't from the same country.

i think at their heights Nirvana and Oasis were at about the same level worldwide...
Nirvana were bigger in America, and Oasis bigger in the U.K. in their primes.
God bless.

Nirvana.
Oasis was as popular in Europe as Nirvana was in North America.
But Oasis was never as popular in North America as Nirvana was/is in Europe.

Did they write the fastest selling album of all time... no? It were different times, they both started on indie labels, had amazing second albums and overblown 3rd ones. The difference is that because of a song written by Nirvana(one of their last to be recorded) Noel Gallagher wrote his first very good song. And that one continued a lot more after their high.

Haha In Utero is the complete opposite of an overblown album, but then again you probably haven't even listened to it.

Haha In Utero is the complete opposite of an overblown album, but then again you probably haven't even listened to it. you're laughing but you're the one who's wrong. In Utero's as huge as Be Here Now. a fucking MONSTER. if you can't get what Manualex was saying, you're just blind. fucking bland, let me tell you.

Bland? Did we listen to the same album? The only way In Utero can be compared to Be Here Now is its loud. 2 vastly different albums from 2 vastly different bands. If anything Nevermind is more comparable to an Oasis release as the songs are so polished, In Utero was deliberately made to be abrasive and challenge their fanbase. Be Here Now was just Noel's attempt to make an epic record whilst off his tits on coke, not that it isn't a great album mind, so I can safely say on this I am not wrong and In Utero is the polar opposite of what Be Here Now is.

Searching the internet and sites with sales i find out both bands with an estimated 50 million global sales. Nirvana as a US rock band sold a lot more copies in north america than oasis and that gives them definitely an advance.
anyway, both band were really great and definitely huge in the 90s
not to forget that pearl jam were probably bigger than both bands at the time!
btw, reading some comments here i think its a great discussion to compare "In Utero" and "Be here now". both albums came after the incredible success of Nevermind & morning glory and somehow both albums, for diffrent reasons, musically and emotionally pushed the bands on the edge."In utero" in the darkest places with Cobain's depression and "Be Here Now" to the sunniest...

Here in Austria, Nirvana were hugely popular, especially in my circle of friends. They were the first current band I really got into. I am of the generation where the question "where were you when you heard that Kurt is dead?" is an important one. (At home, before school, watching MTV and then sadly spreading the news.) I loved Nevermind, everybody did, but it was In Utero which really grabbed me. I cannot say anything about Oasis in the 90ies here, because I happily ignored them. We were much more into grunge then. Pearl Jam, to this day, is one of my favorite bands. But surely you had to have lived beneath a stone to not have heard the most well known songs, like "Wonderwall" etc. It only took me about 20 years to find out that Oasis were much more than that.

I´d go for Oasis... about Oasis not breaking the America, Noel put it right I think “We’re inherently lazy, you know what I mean? We wanna be getting pissed half the time, and the other fuckin’ time we want to be getting fuckin’ high. I’m not arsed about going to see some fat c*nt and his fat kids and his fat record shop in fuckin’ Fatsville, USA… What the fuck do I care about him?” It´s too much ass kissing to make it big in America, otherwise they would be much bigger there

Nirvana - one of the most overrated bands in history!
It's sturge, sad and unbearable to listen to.
How many songs can the general public name compared to Oasis?
Oasis shit all over Nirvana!

Nirvana was absolutely crushing it from 1991-1994.
Oasis dominated from 1994 to 1998.
The difference when it comes down to it is Oasis had a lackluster second chapter. Nirvana was never seen to have lost it because Cobain left us way too soon so their musical legacy remains intact with no duds or average albums. Even today in America, young teenagers LOVE Nirvana and they weren't even born when the band were active. I guess it would be the same with Oasis over in the UK.
Both were massive in their own time.

In America, oasis amounts to 3-4 songs (if you're lucky) in order of notoriety;
wonderwall, don't look back in anger, champagne supernova, morning glory.

But in the whole Europe at least Wonderwall,Don't look back in anger and Champagne Supernova are extremely famous, the only really well known song by Nirvana is Smells like teen spirits (maybe In Bloom),at the end Nirvana are in the USA what Oasis are in UK Surely they're the biggest bands of the last 20 yrs and probably the last two who had a cultural impact

When Nirvana ended, Oasis begun.
I think Nirvana had a huge impact for the young poeple back in time, especially in the US, but worldwide, it would have been Oasis for sure.
Who were the bigger, who were not isn't a big deal anyway to me.

Good decision to unlock this thread.
I detest the whole grunge scene, I suppose a little like Heavy Rock, where you can barely hear an audible note!
