I'm enjoying this album. It's definitely the album they made after High Violet. There is much more inflection? in his voice, (and more prominent use of a backing female vocalist), sorta seems like a shame to me, his voice really carries the simpler songs like Wasp Nest. Sea of Love, Humiliation and Demons are all especially good on early listens. As always, there are the few lyrics of pure brilliance scattered throughout. 'When I walk into a room I do not light it up' They do tend to have GREAT lyrics. "There's a science to walking through windows."

They do tend to have GREAT lyrics. "There's a science to walking through windows." Totally agree mate. Worst part is that after I listen I always want to throw them into conversation, but their lyrics (as above) don't tend to work that way. "Oh yeah man, I get that, I feel like a white girl in a dress in a park of white girls"

Only Matt Berninger can get away with singing these lyrics without sounding cheesy. "I got my baby to pound me"#Humiliation

Lots of posts lennon, pushing it a little, but I feel ya dude. best album of the year so far and you're stuck in a thread with just me to talk about it.
Don't worry about it, it'll pick up man.
Also they get bigger with every new album, this one seems to be no exception. Being a fan from their debut must have been the most rewarding thing since ever
Edit - what are the odds on the 'i love a stone' line - the options being either / one of those regular lyrical ambiguities that generally make no sense / a reference to Okkervil River's A Stone

Liking the new album. Not quite as good as Boxer or High Violet so far, but National albums tend to grow on me.

Just got this album today (a bit more than an hour ago) and I'm listening to it right now as I type. I'm loving it. It's much less dark than Boxer, but not quite same as High Violet. To me, with this album Matt finally started to "sing" (Lennon must know what I mean) "I Need My Girl" is a brilliant tune.
Again, a truly fantastic band which finally got what they deserve. I hope they will keep create great music.

I believe it was self produced by the Dessner brothers instead of their previous producer Peter Katis. What are your highlights? Mine are: - Don't Swallow The Cap - Sea of Love (love that chorus) - This Is The Last Time - Graceless - Humiliation I'm hoping the song "Rylan" appears as a b-side or bonus track eventually I loved the live version and was surprised it didn't make the record.

My highlights of the album are: I Should Live In Salt Don't Swallow The Cap This Is The Last TIme I Need My Girl Graceless To be honest, I got to used to it when High Violets came out 3 years ago as I loved that darkness in Boxer so much. I think this new album is more relaxed.

My own top 5, wanting to fit in
Humiliation This is the Last Time Sea of Love I Should Live in Salt Pink Rabbits
best moment on the album for me is the 'when i walk into the room, I do not light it up' on Demons. I find I Need my Girl a little boring. that and Hard to Find are really the only weak tracks in my opinion.
again, amazing album. i don't listen to enough music for my opinion to be highly valueable, but I'm gonna go ahead and say (suck it arcade fire) that they are the best band out there now.

i know i'm late to the party guys, but i just picked up the album today. after two listens, the standouts for me are: don't swallow the cap, sea of love, heavenfaced, i need my girl. i'm amazed by some of the lyrics.... just when you think you know what's coming next they totally change it up. i wish i could write songs like that! and 'heavenfaced' sounds like it could have been written from springsteen's pen. really digging this album!

I love how this band writes about being in your late 30s/early 40s. It's not all about cigarettes & alcohol anymore. "I got Tylenol and beer"

All the lyrics are written by Matt. He's brilliant and not shamed to show his weakness by writing those lyrics. For that reason, he's common to Moz.

Didn't you get a glass of wine from Matt then? (He shared his wine with a couple of audiences at Paradiso 3 years ago)

Really looking forward to listen to your recording.
