It's pretty amazing to think that there will be no Illinois or Indiana teams in this year's tournament. Never thought I'd see that happen Very true considering that those are traditionally strong basketball states. It seems like most people think that Indiana is the basketball state. As a north carolinian I will always believe that NC has more consistent basketball culture. Strong showing in the dance too with Duke, UNC, NC State (who a lot of people are hating one for getting in but the fact is TJ Warren could possibly carry State at least a couple games), Coastal Carolina, NCCU. UNCA, UNCW, and Davidson are also solid-decent programs.

UNCA, UNCW, and Davidson are also solid-decent programs. Both of their problems, especially Illinois teams, have come recruiting locally. Considering the basketball talent Chicago has pump out with Dwayne Wade, Derrick Rose, Anthony Davis, Jabari Parker and a host of others that are fueling places like Duke (who picked up another top Chicago recruit, maybe the best H.S. player in the country, Jahlil Okafor), there's no reason that an Illinois team shouldn't compete and be one of the best teams in college basketball year in year out. I know the frustrating thing in going to DePaul is the herd mentality. No local player is willing to stay...which makes no sense...because no one can tell me that if a great player goes to a place like U of I they won't get coverage, yet they'll go off to be a one and done somewhere else. Which also makes no sense because if a player is going to be a one and done then what does it matter where you play? Anyways, now the young players have been trained by prep coaches to always put U of I and DePaul in their final five of colleges they will commit to, though they have no thoughts on committing to either one, so as to not rile up the local fanbases. Right, now it's very frustrating to be a fan in either state because everyone knows the talent is there. But for some reason, whether hook or by crook or just plain getting beaten out, we haven't been able to keep clear top college talent and top NBA talent local. Everyone is waiting for the player that has the courage and his own mind to stay and help bring back at least one storied program.

Very true Chicago is probably the finest recruiting city in the nation. A similar thing is happening to Texas to a degree as well. They are the home of a lot of recruits but Rick Barnes and other coaches can't seem to nab their home grown recruits. Honestly those coaches should put an emphasis on early recruiting. Start a bond or show interest in potential prospect. The out of state programs just seem be more established and more relevant. DePaul and UI coaches aren't as alluring as a Krzyzewski, Self, Pitino, Izz, etc.. Purnell was decent at Clemson but at DePual it seems he is struggling.

DePaul and UI coaches aren't as alluring as a Krzyzewski, Self, Pitino, Izz, etc.. Purnell was decent at Clemson but at DePual it seems he is struggling. I know years ago when Purnell was hired one of the complaints was that DePaul didn't show enough early interest. Which personally, I think is b.s., but DePaul tried to step-up their local presence more and has yet to really make a dent. I believe many of the local high school coaches will make any excuse for why players aren't staying local to cover-up corruption. I mean, you expect to lose some recruits to bigger name coaches, but all of them? I know many of the recent coaches at places like Northwestern, DePaul, and U of I (basically those in the last 15-20 years), have talked about many of the prep coaches being extremely corrupt, which I wouldn't doubt. I think it's a multitude of factors for local teams. Some of it does have to do with name recognition, some with corruption by local coaches selling players away, and some with not having enough presence. I'm just hoping that at some point it turns around.

I did have Harvard to beat Cincinnati and didn't have Ohio State going to the sweet sixteen, so I've got that going for me.
God bless.
