I see HC this way: the good songs are GREAT, but the bad songs are REALLY bad.
Stop Cryin', Hindu Times and Little By Little could stand up to almost anything Oasis has ever done... Songbird is great, especially live,
BUT...
Better man, Force Of Nature, All In The Mind, are DREADFUL in my book.
I know that 99% of you will disagree with me, but I think She Is Love is great, and Born On A Different Cloud, while not their worst song by ANY means, is way overrated.

I agree with almost everything you said, except for the She Is Love part, i think it's one of the worse Oasis songs ever I Think as an album HC isn't very good, but it has some great songs like SCYHO, THT, LBL and Songbird. BOADC is good too

There's no terrible songs, a couple of very good songs and mostly average songs.

Force Of Nature is pretty decent but not great . . . it's just Oasis in another vein. It works great as a breakup song, too, you can't take that away from it.
I won't defend A Quick Peep (kinda pointless) or All In The Mind (psychadelic trip with some parts missing) or She Is Love (I can see Bob from That 70's Show singing it, for whatever unholy reason.) I don't see the problem with Better Man, except there are too many "yeahs" and "uh-huhs" and not enough words.
It's an album with great and not so great songs, but for its time it was hard evidence that the band wasn't going to die yet.

After listening to it today I must say it's better than I remember.
The Hindu Times - Wonderful song.
Force Of Nature - Criticised by lots of fans but I like it. Quite cheesy, not great, but an endearing song.
Hung In A Bad Place - A good song.
Stop Crying Your Heart - Very nice ballad but not up there with their best.
Songbird - Lovely.
Little By Little - At the time I really liked this but went off it. After listening to it a few times recently it's growing on me again. It's a bit naff but it's still a good song.
A Quick Peep - It was never meant to be another Champagne Supernova just a lively little recess between songs. It does its job. I don't understand why this gets stick when nobody says anything about 6 and 11.
(Probably) All In The Mind - Why do so many people hate this? It's a great little pop song.
She Is Love - Quite charming but probably would have been better as a b-side because of Songbird's presence on the album.
Born On A Different Cloud - Epic
Better Man - Not that memorable. A decent song which doesn't really go anywhere. Love the outro, perfect to end an album.

the great songs on HC(THT, SCYHO, LBL and Songbird) are better than the top 4 on DBTT which really dissappoints me still....There is no way Lyla, TIOBI, LTBL and whatever else yyou want to throw in are better

it lacks some original and fresh songs on it, nothing really new that you wouldn't expect from oasis, i personally think BOADC is the best song on the record..

HINDU TIMES - Great track, excellent opener
FORCE OF NATURE - Not brilliant but better than it gets credit for. If Liam had sung it you would all love it! Only thing that irks me is the repetition of the "get on your knees and pray" line from Gas Panic!
HUNG IN A BAD PLACE - Excellent rocker, great piano breakdown.
STOP CRYING YOUR HEART OUT - Fantastic. Should have been worldwide #1.
SONGBIRD - Brilliant. At the time I thought it sounded unfinished (needed an extra verse) but over time have come to feel it's great as it is.
LITTLE BY LITTLE - Kind of a Noel-by-numbers song. Not bad but not great. Again, maybe if Liam had sung it then maybe everyone would think more fondly over it. Like FON it sounds like what it is - a song Noel wrote four years previously and dredged up for the sessions.
A QUICK PEEP - Pointless. Nobody rags on The Swamp Song on MG because it was threaded through the album like a theme, and more to the point had novelty value back then. This is just filler.
(PROBABLY) ALL IN THE MIND - Underrated tune, this. Great bit of psychedelia. Could probably have done with a more varied 3rd verse but has top vocals from the boys and a killer guitar solo.
SHE IS LOVE - I don't get the hate for this song. It's a simple little acoustic love song. They don't all have to be huge rockers you know! Personally I like it and I think was a big deal for Noel to put it out and the closest he will ever get to saying "I love you" in a song.
BORN ON A DIFFERENT CLOUD - Top tune, great lyrics. Liam really pulled it off. Maybe with a bit more adventurous production this could have been another world-betaing anthem. Still a great song that probably tries a bit too much to be John Lennon but fuck it, sounds great.
BETTER MAN - For me, this song is a big shrug. Don't hate it, don't love it. It starts, goes on for a bit in the same vein, then ends. For me a weak ending to the record. If they'd finished Idler's Dream properly and put that on the end - woah baby.
So all in all a very good (but not excellent) record. If the boys had been a bit more adventurous in production (not in a wanky way, just in a "does it all have to sound like Just Starting Over?" way) it would have been ace. It's the start of their current musical rehabilitation either way gang - if you like what they're doing now, you have this album to thank for it.

I quite like A Quick Peep, it's some decent music, reminds me of something Badly Drawn Boy would do.
The Hindu Times bores me a bit these days, depends what mood i'm in, Force of Nature i still like (Noel vocals are good), Hung In a Bad Place is a great song too.
I actually like every song on that album but i don't think they fit together very well. I can't sit and listen to the whole album because when i'm in the mood for Force of Nature and Hung In a Bad Place and vice versa, when i want to listen to She Is Love and Songbird i don't wanna hear The Hindu Times.
The Cage is good at the end but it pisses me off that it is so long after Better Man, and it ruins Better Man as i like to listen to it first and put it on repeat (it has a similiar feel to the songs at the beginning of the album) but i can't because of all the time inbetween

It's just such a mediocre record. I like Hindu Times. Force of Nature is okay, I don't like She Is Love or Little by Little. I LOVE BOADC. It's one of my favorite oasis songs. Everything else is pretty mediocre. Stop Crying your heart out isn't that great in my opinion. It just tries so hard to be a champagne supernova.
So yeah, that's HC for me.
Standing on the other hand....ahh.
That record has 7 amazings songs on it. ICSAL is average (would be a great b-side), Little James is also average (I like the innocent feel of it, really, it's not so bad. It's so child like, but not amazing). Put yer Money Not so good. I really love the rest of the record. I think it'd be my favorite if Put Yer Money and I Can See a Liar were dropped for One Way Road and Let's All Make Believe. It'd be sooo perfect.
And Be Here Now.... man I love Be Here Now. Just a long road of Rock and Roll.
It makes me sad when people just shrug them off. Most don't even know about the records. They just shrugged them off because the press did.
But back to the original point. DBTT is miles better, Kalas. It has such a mature Oasis feel. SOOO Bob Dylanish. The acoustic guitars are just woven so nicely throughout the entire record. It's really the defining feel of it.

Hmm...I disagree totally. Heathen Chemistry is an awesome album...the only thing I would criticize it for is not having Liam sing FoN...cmon Noel, you're playing it with a capo on for crying out loud...just take it off, play it down a couple of frets, and let yer brother at it.
Standing, on the other hand, makes my skin crawl. I suppose it's not a horrible album all in all, it's just not an Oasis album. It's what I imagine Noel's solo records will sound like. But if it says Oasis at the top, I want an Oasis album, dang it.

a lot of valid points made here. to sum it up: HC isnt a bad album, it's just a mixture of great songs, even some all-timers in there, and shoulda been b-sides! i feel that noel had problems putting the right songs on an album since Be Here Now (magic pie instead of flashbax, girl in dirty shirt for...well anything)
yeah, the plus of DBTT is, it has nearly no weak songs. the best songs are on the album, the not so good ones are b sides.

I see HC this way: the good songs are GREAT, but the bad songs are REALLY bad. The Hindu Times - A great, catchy song. I love playing it as well, something about the big, chunky B-chord. Force Of Nature - Don't like it at all. Sounds like Noel yodelling in some bits ("prayeeeay"). Don't like the sound of the guitars either. Hung In A Bad Place - Bit better than FON, but still pretty bad. It's actually fairly boring - nothing original at all. Stop Crying Your Heart Out - Definitely in the top ten Oasis songs ever. I love everything about it - the vocals, the melody, the little instrumental bit, the production - it's just a great ballad. Songbird - The most overrated Oasis song ever. Two chords throughout the whole song. Awful lyrics ("Talking to the songbird yesterday/Flew me to a place not far away"), and I can't stand that keyboard bit either. Little By Little - Oasis by numbers? Not such a bad thing, I suppose, but I felt like I'd heard the song before when I first heard it. Nice chorus, and the verse is very Pink Floyd. A Quick Peep - It's okay, but as someone said, it's just filler. Nice to hear a new instrumental song but they could have left it off altogether. (Probably) All In The Mind - The guitar solo saves it, but the keyboard part is really annoying. Very repetitive too. She Is Love - I like it. Reminds me of John Denver - which is a good thing. Much, much better than Songbird. Born On A Different Cloud - Brilliant. Lyrics aren't great, but everything else is excellent. Love the whole feel to the song. The "Na, na, na, naa" bit is almost scary. Better Man - Again, brilliant. Love the guitars, the latter-day Stone Roses sound - great album closer.

I think HC is amazing. There's just something about Force of nature, I don't like the way Noel sings it, I do believe Liam would have done it better, it's not favorite Oasis tune for sure. BUt the rest of the album is just amazing. BOADC is just stunning, it's awesome, best song on the album. And All in the mind is really underrated, Liam's voice is great on that song. It's just a great record.

For some reason everyone is shitting on the previous three albums. I don't know who started it. They all got 8 out of 10 stars when they first came out. Now even Oasis is staying away from them. I think none of thier albums is crap or even mediocre. It is like saying Across the Universe is a shit song because it doesn't compare to Let it Be. I saw Oasis for the first time when they were touring for Be Here Now and have for every album since. At not one of those concerts did I or anyone complain that they should have left the newer material out of the set list.
I doubt anyone would be disapointed if they played Go Let it out or Hindu Times instead of Champagne Supernova. There would be no outcry over that.
The fact is Oasis makes about 7 out of 10 quality songs per album. That is alot better than most bands out there.
Everyone needs to get off that "last three albums blew" wagon.

it's a weird album, it doesn't have much of a sound to it. it's very uneven, in quality and sound of the songs. although the singles are pretty good and are up there among oasis' best songs. I think production really killed it, it's awful. there's not one song that's properly mixed. anyway, still a very enjoyable album and one of the best released in 2002

I would be happy with GLIO or Hindu replacing Supernova definitely. I was never a big fan of it live anyway, except the be here now tour where Noel went off on the guitar. It might be my favorite album track, but live Liam always rushes the vocals and it can't reach the beauty of the recorded version. Anyway, Heathen is a solid record in the canon. It's got great songs like Hindu and Hung. Personally I think the record falters with the track selection. Ending with BOADC and Better Man just doesn't do it for me. It needs a stronger closer. I guess I'm one of the few guys that thinks the album grinds to a halt when BOADC comes on. The beginning of the song really needed to be changed, just my opinion. A real strong closer could make up for it though. What else am I still listening to and talking about from 2002? Seriously, It's got to be one of the best records put out that year.
