What's the big deal anyhow? Paul McCartney in 2012 is irrelevant.

so they can get on twitter to ask who he is, but can't google or wikipedia his name? I find many Facebook users also suffer from this affliction. I do sympathise though. In this golden era of freely accessible information it can be tremendously difficult to find out how much something costs or whether a shop is open.

What's the big deal anyhow? Paul McCartney in 2012 is irrelevant. That's like saying Abraham Lincoln or George Washington are irrelevant. Some people are always relevant, but maybe not in the same sense as he once was, i.e. the sixties.

He's got a point. Sure he is important to musical history...but he isn't relevant to the current musical landscape.
Rest assured most still know who the Beatles are...it's just that they probably can't name the members of a group that has been defunct for 50 years.
Wake me up again when people don't know who the Beatles are and I'll have a right old rant.

He's got a point. Sure he is important to musical history...but he isn't relevant to the current musical landscape. What does it mean anyway ? Having general knowledge isn't relevant in the current musical landscape ? Not knowing him or John Lennon is almost as bad as not knowing the Beatles. What's relevant in the current musical landscape ? Adele ? Lady Gaga ? Kasabian? Fucking Coldplay ? That those teenagers don't know the name of one of the most important man in musical history is a very sad fact. Because it's not just general knowledge. A musician of this important will always be relevant because his music will never dies, it wil never be old fashioned, unlike those artists "relevant in the current musical landscape". He's still here, he's still playing shows, he's still releasing album. He's very more "relevant in the musical landscape" to me than any current shit you would name. There's really no escuses to those tweets. It's jst sad.

He won't ever disappear. But it's been 50 years. He has stood the test of time. His place is secure in history.
He and the Beatles will always large on the horizon for anyone that chooses to explore musical history or the influences of their favorite acts.
But really...he himself kind of is irrelevant at this point. And his greatest contribution was as part of a group that was popular when the grandparents of the current generation were babies.
People are acting like this means that the Beatles are going to be forgotten. Fact is they are a group that has been defunct for 50 years but people still remember the group around the world.
Who gives a shit that people don't remember the members names. They know the music.
I'm sure most of those kids will know a few Beatles songs. Who doesn't? And that is what matters IMO. I don't think it's essential that they know the members names.
I'm sure when the overwhelming majority of these people were informed "He was in the Beatles" they went "Oh" not "Who are the Beatles?"

But Paul mcCartney isn't just a member of a band. He'll be forever associated to it. But it's not like it's Robbie from Take That ffs. At this degree is just general knowledge, that they clearly haven't. Like knowing the Velvet but not Lou Reed or The Stones but not Jagger. If they don't know Paul Mccartney in 2012, I guess it's the road to not even know the Beatles names at all in 2030. And what made the right to decide who is relevant and who isn't? I've seen him live a few years ago and it was better than any current fashion live show. His album "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard" in 2005 was brillant even if he had a few low years. What's being relevant exactly means to you ? Being young and on tv?

I like to believe that the Beatles are still well known.
I don't believe that this is an indication they will be forgotten by 2030.
Aren't we a big fatalistic.

Imagine what music would sound like today without The Beatles; they will never, ever be irrelevant to modern day music.
