Sorry if there is a similar thread already in existence, but I couldn't find anything fairly recent. With the upcoming Brian Wilson movie in the works, I thought him worth a discussion. I'm a huge Beach Boys / Brian Wilson fan. Throw a dart at anything from the surf era until the mid 70's and you're golden. What a fantastic, currently underrated, misunderstood and under-appreciated band. Brian's admirers are essentially anyone important to music. Lennon and McCartney were massive fans, being inspired and challenged by Pet Sounds to step up their game in those middle years. Paul of course considers Wilson tune "God Only Knows" as the best song ever written. Jim Morrison, Neil Young and the other usual suspects are also huge Beach Boys fans and if you listen to his fantastic work as a composer and lyricist it is not hard to understand why. Noel Gallagher has said in the past that he does not like Brian Wilson. Why? Who knows. Wilson is a bonafide musical genius. I'd be curious to know how much time Noel has actually spent listening to classic Beach Boys tracks. It's hard to understand so many of Noel's heroes being in awe of Wilson but then Noel not liking him at all. Maybe because Wilson is American, or maybe Noel is a bit jealous? Maybe he's too hard to rip off? Obviously, I'm a huge Noel fan as well, I just don't get the disconnect. Any other Beach Boys fans around? Favorite tunes? I'm a big Brian Wilson fan too. Don't know why Noel doesn't get it, maybe he hasn't separated it from 'The Beach Boys' as such, but then that would be like judging the Beatle solely on the first four albums. Could also be because wilson is a drug casualty and therefore 'a lightweight' Smile is the one for me though - you have to guess how the tracklisting would have gone, so it's always your own album, like the first real interactive album!

Pet Sounds is a classic. Smile is supposed to be released later this year/early next year (so I hear)...it'll be nice to finally hear Pet Sounds' follow-up, excluding Brian Wilson's Smile album which came out a few years ago.

I too am looking forward to the special edition SMiLE album, absolutely... Let's hope that Noel gets himself a copy and comes around.

Noel may just not like them. Something just might not click with him. They aren't one of my favorite bands but you can't deny their importance and Wilson's talent has a composer/songwriter. Pet Sounds I'd argue is still ahead of its time.

I really don't get folk who slate the Beach Boys - their heads must not be screwed on properly, and probably need to branch out of the post Britpop guitar crap they listen to. They quite comfortably sit alongside The Beatles in terms of legendary status.
Pet Sounds is arguably the greatest album ever made. Easily one of the greatest bands of all time and shit all over most British bands that followed in my opinion.

They were bigger music stealers than Noel And they (at least Brian Wilson) were so much more brilliant than Noel could ever hope to be because of it.

Noel thinks of them as "barbershop quartet music." I'm inclined to agree though I'm also inclined to agree that I'm just being ignorant and stupid.

Great comments here, guys. I'll be seeing Brian Wilson live later in September, looking forward to it... Hopefully he'll do two encores like he's been doing on his other dates.

It has been delayed for quite a while, how are you certain that it will be released on October?
I like them but since they have 20+ albums i dont know what to go after Pet Sounds(wich is the only Beach Boys album i have heard in full).

There isn't an album is their discography that has nearly as much love and care put into it as Pet Sounds, but that doesn't mean they don't have a handful of brilliant albums. I would check out Smiley Smile, Friends, and Sunflower.

brian wilson is a freaking genius and "pet sounds" and "smile" are, in my opinion, among the greatest pieces of american music of the 20th century. to discard the beach boys because they did surfing songs during their early years is the same to me as ignoring the beatles for their early records. it's like hating on neil young for "trans" and "everybody's rockin'". i thought it was coming up soon.

This is just pure, raw talent. Brian Wilson is one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century.

In Glasgow at the Royal Concert Hall... I'm very excited, it'll be my first time seeing him live. So glad to see so much love for him and the Beach Boys (pre-1980...) on the boards. It's a sophisticated choice. I hope Noel comes around, but if not it is his loss.

Well, I'd say that, despite my admiration for the Beach Boys and particularly Brian Wilson, they've never been seen as a particularly "cool" act, even to hardcore music fans. Some bands from the '60s and '70s seem to strike a chord (apologies for the pun) with newer generations more than others. The Doors, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Led Zep, etc...on the whole they're seen as cool bands are very respected. The Beach Boys...well, those who know about Pet Sounds and Smile certainly have a lot of love for them, but most people don't.
Not sure if that made sense, but I think it's at least apparent what I'm trying to say.

^ I agree with you when you say that a lot of folk think they're uncool, but that's a big problem with a lot of music listeners these days - they judge everything on whether it's cool or not, which is a massive shame as kids are so prone to jumping on the bandwagon these days.... which in itself is very uncool actually.
Thankfully those who aren't so ignorant keep these bands relevant. If we judged everything on 'coolness' then guys like Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Handel and Beethoven would never have a legacy at all.
