Gem Archer emits an effortlessly cool charm and he's the kinda guy that cuts a 'rock and roll figure' without trying too hard. He also seems a faily relaxed and affable fellow, commendable traits that balance the narcissistic Gallagher egos. Much and all as the ballistic barre chording of Bonehead turned Oasis up to eleven; a great, if basic sound that would never be replicated in post 1999 Oasis, Gem looks like Gem and plays like Gem. And he ain't bald. End of. He was neccessary for Oasis in their 21st Century mold.
Whilst I find Heavy Stereo incredibly underwhelming with their dirgy glam rock tinged stylings, Gem is a great player- you only need look at his finger dexterity when playing solos to realise it's light years ahead of Noel's, at times, clumsy noodling. Clearly, however, Gem's songwriting skills aren't in the same league as Noel's. That's why they were a great pairing- a wholly satisfying balance. I thought the Stop The Clocks tours worked brilliantly with the two of them and I wouldn't have been too upset had Gem chosen to play with Noel on his solo projects. Having Noel on rhythm acoustic and Gem playing beautiful plaintive solos was just the bollocks.

^^ Great post. Also a great username, for what it's worth.
I can't believe this forum has Gem haters! How can you possible dislike the guy? Really cool and nice guy, plays the guitar well, and seems to enjoy performing on stage while in his own little bubble. Love it. Favorite non-Gallagher member, bar none.

That's precisely my problem with Gem. I'm sure he's a nice guy and all but he is, as you said, "in his own little bubble" half the time.

I have nothing against Gem except that his songs were generally terrible and during the last few years his guitar style and sound became too much of a focal point for the band. From 2000 - 2004 I loved his guitar playing, but it became more "anti-Oasis" starting on DBTT and the subsequent tour.
He had some fantastic moments during the acoustic tour, but at points sacrificed melody and timing in order to sound ultra chic.
Also, the songs from DM and WTSMG always lacked the wall of sound and layered "punch" when played live with Gem (especially 2005 - 2009).

The band never sounded better than on the DBTT and DOYS tours. Open your ears.

For fux sake man, so long as you eliminate the lead singer, I suppose.
Saw four shows (and countless b-legs, tv casts) over those (2) tours and liam sounded average to horrible at every one of them.
Every. Fucking. One. Of. Them.
I know, I witnessed ALL of the "wrong" performances and he sounds great when you've got a case of barley-pops runnin through your veins.
spare me.
The fact that some attest that he's "great" at the beady eye gigs is a testament to just how fkn delusional some are in these parts.
"hey look, he doesn't sound dick-skewering atrocious!"
give it up you fkn turd-twiddlers.

No idea why you invoke Llam Happy in your response.....

Gem is cool, but letting him write songs...meh!
Andy Bell...tosser, him and tony mccarrol would probably hit it off

Open your ears. I was referring to the band minus Liam. Obviously, Liam sounded poor.

Even TODAY, at BDI gigs Liam's voice is snarly and he sounds out of breath most of the time. It's not good vocal control.

And what about Liam's vocals in the 90's? Perfect IMO. It's only round 02 or something his vocals were really awful. ^Live. Screaming down every last line *cringe :-\ And yeah this ruins them songs. Didn't really like Andy as a bass player, guess he's doing much better as a guitarist + he kinda writes good songs *listen to couple of his band RIDE.
And Gem's doing great with Oasis. Else, why would Noel pick him for his acoustics? Meaning Noel reckoned he's good.

I like Gem, and think he's a good guitarist, but he started to annoy me on the DOYS tour. His solos sounded good, but they always seemed a bit too studied and stylised. I also disagree that he was effortlessly cool - he looked to me like someone trying very hard to LOOK effortlessly cool.
He kinda reminds me of my dad. And I really like my dad - but I don't think he'd fit in to Oasis...
