It's a good rule for prose.
Poetry(and lyrics) is a different matter though(and in prose plenty of space for exceptions). I think poetry has a lot more "space" for telling before one starts missing the showing.
Mostly the rule refers to finding a details that show more information than simple telling. I think someone who writes very 'showing a story' sort of lyrics is Alex Turner. Personally I agree he's very good at it, but I'm not a big fan.
It's funny though lots of people find Liam's lyrics cold and not delivering emotions and all that, it's the opposite for me.

I think Noel is a weird one because I can like them for several very different reasons. They are either abstract to the point of almost indeciferability or they can be loaded with imagery but the thing tht usually gets me is that they are intensely personal (@ his best)...THAT is what I think that LAG lack in general.
When I listen to a Noel song with lyrics...they seem like they come directly from him...even when it was Liam singing. Like I couldn't imagine anyone else writing them. Although maybe everyone is that way about their favorite artists. But in my mind Noel has a very distinct voice...
Gas Panic sounds great with Liam's voice...but I picture the tongueless ghost of sin creeping through someones curtains...it's Noel's curtains not Liam.
I could never imagine Liam looking out and beseaching someone or himself to stop crying their heart out.
Idlers Dream, Slide Away, Talk Tonight, Wonderwall, Cigarettes in Hell, Live Forever, Married with Children, Falling Down, Part of the Queue, Stay Young, Half the World Away, Don't Go Away, Lets All Make Believe.
I am familiar with the BDI lyrics...but I don't think that any of them scream to me as being the voice of their writer.
That is not to say that ALL Noels songs are like that. There are many whose lyrics are middling and serve only for the vocalist to sing to the melody. But those are obviously not Noel at his lyrical best. Doubt anyone would truly argue the lyrical merits of something like MG, Digsys Dinner, SE, PYMWYMI, THT, Lyla, TSOTL, BIU, HHL

I don't mind your spouting nonsense in the most of the threads. It's funny most of the times. But seriously...when people are having an actual conversation there is NOTHING more annoying and frustrating than having to scroll past a dozen posts of absolute twaddle by you and the few people that take you up on it to find anything of any sustance to read. There are so many useless threads on this board or ones that have already basically been talked out plus a whole thread devoted to posting what is on your mind. When people are actually having a conversation...let yourself out quietly please like a big boy. |

I'm utterly hopeless at anything like this, I don't have a very analytical mind and I'm a bit thick when it comes to anything related to english literature/language so I wont be properly joining in this discussion. I never really get the meanings of lyrics or even really pay any attention to the words until I've listened to something 10/20 times, I mostly just pay attention to the music and melody. However I'm bored, not tired and there's nobody to talk to at half 1 in the morning  so I'm gonna post this pointless crap. Enjoy  Also everybody just calm the fuck down! |
