He is really not that good of a song writer. His stuff all sounds like he is aping the Beatles. But the melodies are really not that good. I do not mind the Roller, but his output since 2002 has been aweful.
Andy has redeemed himself...Gem not so much.

Having said that Andy had to redeem himself. He founded one of the greatest bands ever: RIDE

Said this last week.
Wind up Dream was a pleasant surprise though, really dig that one.
Leave the next one to Liam and Andy please Gem, perhaps give him one track as a token gesture.
Top guy/musician - shite songwriter.

Three Ring Circus is great and The Roller is a nice tune. Half are pretty good on the album and in the past he has had some good tunes.
I think his major input comes from his guitar playing, I think he will have written the solos on the album.

I think he also plays a massive part in liams songs though and andy even said that gem was the one who "turned TBGO around" He's a good songwriter, about on par with liam, that said andy is still by far the best, TBGO is one of the best songs ever.

He's not great at conceptualizing a song...but judging by his work with Liam he has a way of taking someone else good idea and really building it up.
I think that everyone songs are better for him having influence...he just isn't the best @ creating the germ of a song.
I think his role is invaluable in the band. I don't know why anyone thinks that to be a valuable member you have to write tunes or that by saying he isn't a great songwriter we are invalidating him.
The thing that worries me is that Beady Eye will start operating on a quota system like Oasis did. Where everyone has to have a contribution for fairness sake.
Is fluke that they all have almost the same # of tunes on the album? I don't think so. I know they credit them to GAB...but it obviously occured to them they they should have = numbers of tunes

Though I generally agree with the OP's point, Three Ring Circus is a fucking tune and a half.

His work during the Oasis days varies from mediocre to decent, with the exception of TBWTL I can't remember a single song of his I rate highly. I've always believed -and still do- that he's got a lot to offer but never reached his potential as a songwriter. His input in DGSS though is a big step forward from his stuff the past ten years. I like 3 of his songs on the album (The Roller was a disappointment to me) and I'm looking forward to hear more from him.

I think he's not brilliant songwriter but i think is too harsh to called it shite... I like his contributions in the album,,, maybe Standing on the Edge of The Noise is mediocre - bad but also the bad production ruins it for me.

i like Gem's songs.... i know ABWR get slated here quite often but i like the song. same with TBWTL, it doesn't have a great melody or anything but still. he might not be as good as Andy but that doesn't mean he's outright bad.

Gem has always been my favorite non-Gallagher member. Sure, he may be responsible for one of the worst songs on the album in SOTEOTN, but he's also responsible for one of the highlights with TRC, which is just awesome. And somehow, Wind Up Dream turned out to be much better than I thought it would based on the previews. The Roller isn't half bad, too! And he only went wrong on TBWTL by trying to be too clever by dropping the guitars - the live version of that song is immense. I think the OP is underestimating Gem's songwriting credentials and potential. And as already been pointed out - he helps Liam's songs greatly, and is a fantastic guitarist who shows some passion in his playing on stage as well. This forum needs a Gem fan club

ABWR is Andy's. And it's horrible. I hate that preachy song, and how boring it gets at the end.

Since when did Andy Bell 'redeem' himself? He hasn't needed to be redeemed. It's obvious that he is an amazing talent - didn't Ride show that? It's tiring having to defend him and I can't believe some folk are surprised that he has, apparently (because I haven't listened to it yet), written the best tunes on Different Gear Still Speeding. A lot of us could of said he would do that last year.
Just because he might seem boring to some on the outside doesn't mean he shouldn't be taken seriously. This is one example in which it's all about what's on the inside.
