FAB FOUR ITS BRILLIANCE The Beatles influence on this album is clear, writes Kathy Mcabe
album of the week Dig out your soul Oasis 4/5 stars
Has anyone ever seen Noel Gallagher and Paul Mcartney in the same room? Could it be that Oasis, the band that put Britpop on the international map with their nemesis Blur, have actually become the Beatles with their 7th record? That's where they have been heading since dropping their incendiary debut Definitely Mabye in 1994 and the gallaghers have always worn the influence of the Fab Four proudly. In neon. Dig out your soul is their most overt tribute to that revolutionary pop band yet. their are lyrical references -The Shock of the Lightning's "magical mysteries" - and the predominant theme shares the Beatles' fascination with spiritual realms. They sample John Lennon speaking during a 1980 BBC interview on the Liam penned I'm Outta Time, which is without a doubt, one of the finest ballads of the band's career. The younger Gallagher really knows how to nail the slow ones. Even the vocals, particularly on the aformentioned ballad, sound like Liam anf Noel were indulging in some I am the Walrus karaoke before they headed into the studio. So does all this Beatles reverence, channeling, straight out copying -(Get off Your) High Horse Lady sounds like it was ripped from the Abbey Road Studio vaults - signal Oasis is nothing more than a clever covers band? Not when they do it this well and consistently. There is an art to doing what you do best at the highest level - ask any athelete - and Oasis have actually delivered one of their strongest albums of their career with Dig Out Your Soul.
