recently joined the forum and i've realized there is alot of hate for this song. there are reasons it is so famous and loved. it isn't my favourite oasis tune. but it is one of the best songs ever written. stands up against anything written by anyone.

It is definitely not hated on these boards, we just recognise that there are other Oasis songs better than that one.

Wonderwall is a great tune. Its far from their best but the song is one of the best songs ever written I personally think. great riff, chords, lyrics, melody, drums, just everything goes well. It doesn't really have an amazing vocal from RKid but its a great tune and its just amazing that Oasis have so many more songs better than this one and this one is a classic.

not hate...bitterness more like. cos it gets so much attention, and we all know how many other equally-as-worthy songs oasis have that people don't know about.

It's called "hardcore fan syndrome". They tend to loath the song (or album) that broke the band into the mainstream. Wonderwall did that for Oasis in North America.
And I agree with you, it holds up against any song ever written. It's a classic.
Over at the Verve forum they all hate Urban Hymns. Go figure.

Well, I love it but they have tons of equally good or superior songs!

As a major Oasis fan, I can still say I consider Wonderwall to be one of their top 5 songs (possibly top 3)
Hell... Wonderwall was one of my favorite songs wayyyyy before I ever got into the bands other stuff, which is actually the reason that I gave DM and WTSMG a listen in the first place.
A good percentage of the people I know prolly consider Wonderwall to be one of their top 25 favorite songs here in the US. Sadly, however, they dont know that Oasis has tons of other good songs... Everybody knows Wonderwall, some people know Champagne Supernova... and very few people could name one other song. Hell... I bet in my whole school, I wouldnt be able to find 3 people who could name more than 2-3 Oasis songs.
So yea, I love Wonderwall, although the song frustrates me at the same time cuz Oasis is known as a "one hit wonder" because of it. So I have a complicated love-hate relationship w/ the song lol. However, at acoustic open mic nights... its a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

I think it shows you how good Oasis are when people say that Wonderwall isn't nearly their best.
It's a great song, don't get me wrong, but the likes of Live Forever, Slide Away, Columbia, Supersonic (wow DM really was a great album), DLBIA, POTQ, (I could go on forever) are better songs in their own right.
However, what makes Wonderwall special is that EVERYONE knows it. It makes for great sing a long no matter the occasion. Oasis' tunes are good regardless, but what propels them into the next and highest level is when they have tunes that everyone connects to - DLIBA is another example of this.
So I feel that Wonderwall is regarded highly not only because it's a good tune, but because it got good promotion and produces a good emotional sing a long. But there are indeed many other songs that are better and over looked by the majority of the population because they arent as sing songy
Can you really see people singing "All of a sudden I lost my way out of the city" at a party? Nor can I. But POTQ > Wonderwall

Liams drunken vocals, the chords, the acoustic guitars in the background which you don't really notice at first, the genius piano in the end, the lyrics.
I think Wonderwall is a top tune.

It is one of their best songs. Hardcore fans tend to lose perspective as they sift through b-sides and unreleased demos. There's a reason it was a top ten hit in the U.S. Noel once said in an interview that he always thought they'd be remembered for Live Forever, but it seems like they'll be known for Wonderwall instead.

No-way is POTQ better than Wonderwall. No hope!!! Wonderwall is an original epic song. As much as I hate the fact that Wonderwall gets all the attention and I like POTQ, Wonderwall is much beter. POTQ is a rip off of Golden Brown, and if Noel could write another song that would be as huge as Wonderwall he would. SCYHO was the closest he got to it.

SCYHO was the closest he got to it. I think TIOBI is a stronger song that SCYHO, but I get what you're saying. But something feels lacking in SCYHO. The song never quite takes off. Possibly a middle 8 - a change in melody. SCYHO is damn good song, but not great.

Agree entirely with the exception of POTQ being a better song than Wonderwall. Great as POTQ is, there just ain't no way.

. It doesn't really have an amazing vocal from RKid but its a great tune. I'd say the exact opposite, he sounds incredible. I'd say Wonderwall is easily in the band's 10 best songs too.
