Do you think songs like Lyla would have gone #1 if oasis hadnt their massive history behind them???.. ...do you think that DBTT/HC/SOTSOG would have been as succesful? TIOBI was DBTT's saviour, without it, well it just wouldnt be much, like yes the songs are good but TIOBI is the DLBIA of DBTT. Someone recently said to me, after me boasting of Oasis' 7 UK #1s, that it doesnt matter how shit those songs could be, they will still go number 1 because oasis is fueled on WTSMG...... It was their public break through.....dont say DM was because most people have never heard anything off DM..... So, if you got a completely new band, got them to record just say, Lyla or LTBL or evem DYKWIM.....do you honestly think they would fair well in the Charts.... (i dont give a fucking donkeys balls about what you thinkl because you will all love it anyway ) do you think lyla would reach #10 if some small random band released it in the same form??....i really dont think sooo

NO. Lyla sux balls.
However, most bands (U2, Colplday, fuck pretty much all bands) rely on their reputation and fan base for chart topping. The songs usually don't have shit to do with it.
Pretty much only for new bands does the actual song play a prominent role in chart positioning.

SOTSOG would have became a legendary album if Oasis weren't big.
As years go by, I really start to enjoy that album while I felt such disapointed back in 2000

Interesting question.
Wasn't Lyla also the first single as well? That helped a lot. I doubt it would have hit #1 if it was the third single.

In the UK it doesn't take a great number of sales to get to number one anymore.

If DBTT were a bands debut, it would be hailed as a masterpiece (not that it isn't anyway)

If DBTT were a bands debut, it would be hailed as a masterpiece (not that it isn't anyway) Wow. What your standards to reach 'Masterpiece' level are pretty damn low. Are you kidding me??! DBTT is definitely not a masterpiece. It's a pretty damn good album, not much more though.

What I will say is that Coldplay's new album only topped the charts because of their reputation, as did their horrible song Violet Hills....If Coldplay released that album as their debut, they would have fallen flat on their face. So yes, reputation drives success....but that's how everything in life works.....
As for Oasis - SOTSOG abnd HC were def driven by their previous success, but I feel DBTT earned the right alone to be there. First and foremost, Lyla does anything but suck - it's poppy, great live, etc and would be an instant chart topper regardless. TIOBI, POTQ, LLAB, and KTDA (the latter 2 being the weaker of the 4 listed there, but still good tunes), along with aformentioned Lyla, in addition to the stomper of TUTS helps provide the success of that album on merit alone.....

If DBTT were a bands debut, it would be hailed as a masterpiece (not that it isn't anyway) One of the biggest exaggerations ever uttered on any Oasis forum ever. DBTT is hardly a masterpiece by any bands estimations. Its solid, unquestionably, but its hardly a masterpiece. If DBTT was Oasis' debut, it would be hailed as a good start for an up and coming band, nothing more.
