What are, in your opinion, top 5 Noel penned/sung songs that you can call outstanding?
Here's my list: (no order)
Half the World Away The Masterplan Talk Tonight Don't Look Back in Anger Take Me Away
How would your list look like?
P.S. One clarification: please list the songs that are sung by Noel in the released versions (e.g., even though I adore Don't Go Away version by Noel, it wouldn't fit here since it was sung by Liam on the album)

Guys, Rocking Chair and Let's All Make Believe are both incredible tunes, but they are Liam sung
Nice to see RM on the list, as well as the good old Sad Song
As for The Importance of Being Idle, that's a tricky one... I like the lyrics, like the acoustic version that you can find on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jGwzphvEXc), but I'm not that impressed with the studio version and the version that Noel played during the 2006 acoustic tour. Furthermore, it's so heavily "influenced" by the Kinks (in terms of concept, lyrics, melody and even video) that you can hardly call it original
That's why TIOBI is out of my top 5, but I totally understand why others can include it in their lists

Importance of Being Idle Magic Pie Don't Look Back in Anger Sad Song The Masterplan Magic Pie? Are you full of shit? Talk Tonight TIOBI Half The World Away Masterplan DLBIA I love magic pie! ;D It's way better than half the world away imho, that song has always annoyed me. Noel's voice sounds so whiney. But I'm probably in the minority there

Until recently I really wanted Liam to sing all the songs, just like the good ole days during the DM era. Yet I've suddenly really grown to love Noel's voice, which is probably for the best seeing as we'll never get another fully sung Liam record. I think Noel reminds me a bit like a cross between Neil Young and Paul MCcartney. He has the same rock'n'roll holler as Macca but he also has that slight mewl in his voice like Neil Young which drives his voice. And I'm not saying he sounds like Paul MCcartney to once again place them next to the Beatles. I hate that sorta shit.
Anyway, top 5 Noel Gallgher songs,
1. Don't Look Back In Anger
Not only is this one of his best vocals it is easily one of Noel's greatest songs, tapping into the same stream of populism that made the Beatles so fantastic. A Universal pop anthem with great lyrics (admittedly by John Lennon though!). Who can resist it when Noel roars that eternal chorus though? "So Sally can wait..."
2. The Importance Of Being Idle
This is in my opinion the ultimate slacker tune. Its music hallesque stomp is impossibly catchy and Noel's lyrics are some of his best, actually getting into the mindset of well 'being idle'. His voice suits the song so well, his plaintive whine is the voice of slackers everywhere.
3. Talk Tonight
Its my favourite acoustic song by Noel and its one of his 'personal' songs. A rare insight into a songwriter that I respect and and love so much. One of the few opprtunities to connect with the man behind the music.
4. D'yer Wanna Be A Spaceman?
I love this song. it has extra resonance with me because it reflects myself at an age where I want to be everything and yet reality is starting to sink in as I head to university. Its blind optimism sounds less naive than reassuring, like its okay to dream once and awhile. Only Noel's voice is gentle enough to carry this tune, which is catchy as fuck as well.
5. Going Nowhere
Now I have no idea why this song didnt make Be Here Now, replacing the controversial Magic Pie (which I do like though). For one thing its like half as long. It also seems to capture what Be Here Now was all about, with its string quartets and big brass sound. I think this is the only song that actually turned out how it should have been from that era. It also has that universal desire to seek the best in us all, yet reveals Noel as the cynicl commentator realising that maybe his dreams are 'Going Nowhere' after all.
Yeah sorry about that rant.

Funny thing: although I'm not a huge fan of TIOBI (reasons described above), I actually like the fact that so many people mentioned this RELATIVELY NEW song in their lists
P.S. Funny thing No. 2: I know one guy who's under 20, probably never listened to DM or WTSMG, and he's a huge fan of this TIOBI (he'd heard it on the radio and then I've shown him the version from Manchester 05). It's interesting to see how new songs, rather than the old favorites, attract new fans. That's why Oasis (and Noel) should definitely continue making new music.

The Masterplan Don't Look Back in Anger The Importance of Being Idle Talk Tonight Part of the Queue
(I think his vocals are great on the Helter Skelter B-Side, but he didn't pen that one of course. A little edgier than he normally is on that song).

The Importance Of Being Idle is a very good song though! Should be interesting to see if Noel has written a song as good, or better, on Dig Out Your Soul.
