Oasis Show Their Soul

You probably don't need me to tell you Oasis have got a new album on the horizon. Every few months the bloated music industry burps forth a big release, stinking of hype, some truly deserving (Radiohead), some more of the spectacle than the music (Coldplay) and some stalked by swaggering, indefensible self-belief and tireless nostalgia. To this latter category, Famethrowa would include "Dig Out Your Soul", the seventh studio record from the Gallagher brothers, which is out in October.
Unmistakably, here is a band who had their moments. Even now, "Supersonic" bristles with menace, aspiration and power, as you might imagine "Gimme Shelter" would have sounded 40 years ago. But for many, and not just the cynics amongst us, Oasis expired long ago and the newly released tracklisting and Monty Python-esque artwork (see image) for this comeback suggests we are not about to be blown away like it's 1994 all over again.
This suspicion is not helped by what
unfortunately appears to be a Geri Halliwell cover ("Bag It Up") opening the record. And could "Waiting For The Rapture" really be a Liam-penned doodle addressing his tedious bid to get the NYC punk-funkers to sign his autograph book? More seriously, we do now have some music to work with, following the apparent emergence this week of a Chemical Brothers remix of new track "Falling Down" on YouTube.
Steve Lamacq played a DJ white label of the song tonight on 6 Music, confirming the two acts have hooked-up again in a bid to recapture the heady days of "Let Forever Be". Check it out below but to these ears it's virtually impossible amid the vintage processed beats, electro skronk and fried psychedelics to work out what Tom and Ed were handed in the first place. The piano sounds alright but we'll reserve judgement on Noel's claim somewhere in the mix that "It blows my mind".
