Oasis had broken up after Knebworth?
I hear people saying they wish Oasis had walked off the stage at Knebworth and announced that Oasis were splitting up. People justify this by saying it would have preserved Oasis' legacy as a brilliant band with a spotless record, much like The Beatles when they called it quits after Abbey Road. Personally I find this kind of thinking ludicrous. The Beatles were a one off. If Oasis had split up after Knebworth I would never have become a fan as I got into them after hearing The Importance Of Being Idle. I can't believe people would wish Oasis had never recorded songs like Don't Go Away, D'you Know What I Mean, My Big Mouth, Gas Panic, Who Feels Love, Where Did It All Go Wrong, Roll It Over, Part Of The Queue, Let There Be Love or The Importance Of Being Idle.

A lot of what-ifs for that. With all the flack they've taken post Morning Glory, I wouldn't in a million years prefer that they broke up. Too many good tunes, too many good times. Think we'd be getting this excited for a Noel or Liam solo album, or a new band that either of them front? Certainly not. To take a recent example, The Libertines were mythical in ways like Oasis, but Babyshambles and Dirty Pretty Things don't conjure up those same feelings, and I think the music suffers with the absence of either one. Noel and Liam are forever joined by Oasis, whether they like it or not. They may do their own things at some point, but I can't honestly see Oasis breaking up until someone dies. We may see 10 more incarnations of the band by then, but the name Oasis will live on.

I don't think that's what those people are really asking for ... WTSMG was basically a few epic songs added to some fillers, albeit very good ones, but hardly lending to a spotless catalogue. If they had broken up after Knebworth, we'd just be hearing about how they couldn't hold it together for more than two albums.
For whatever reason people think it's cool to mourn for their music. Kurt Cobain was a genius because he killed himself, Pete Doherty's wasting his immesurable talent, Hendrix/Morrison/Janis got all their talent because they were junkies and it was their own undoing, boo hoo hoo.
I mourn Ambulance LTD breaking up after one album and two EPs, it doesn't make them any better of a band. Waste of potential but it just makes them look foolish, not martyred.

I wish I had a Rolls Royce, a million dollars, and a pet monkey, but no, I do not wish Oasis had split.
They are only getting better.

If Oasis had split up after Knebworth I would never have become a fan as I got into them after hearing The Importance Of Being Idle. EXACTLY the same here! Once I heard TIOBI (before I even heard Wonderwall... I'm an American if that's any excuse...) I was pretty hooked and soon discovered everything else. I don't understand that logic at all, why would you want an amazing band to stop making music? Personally a lot of the Oasis I listen to is post-Knebworth, like solo Noel gigs, TIOBI, POTQ, and SOTSOG.

no way... they would have just been flash in the pan...Today they have become a solid band. Plus I don't know where I would be if they did!

Not really. The first album I heard by them properly was Don't Believe The Truth (I was about 7 when Morning Glory came out) and I've always loved Let There Be Love.
