As a huge verve fan i couldn't believe it - but here it is: Later in the set, Ashcroft mysteriously asked the crowd: "Which lead singer of a '90s band told me he was now a mod? 'I've been baggy but now I'm a mod.' Any guesses?" The band then played 'Sit And Wonder', a the opening track from the band's forthcoming album, 'Forth'. Link: www.nme.com/news/the-verve/38032

At which point in that article does it mention Liam? Christ not even the NME writers alluded to it being Laim he was talking about. Jesus.

Clearly Ashcroft meant for us to infer who it was - have you seen any pics of Liam lately Who else would the new mod comment refer to? Any other 90's band singers you know recently undergo such a transformation? This is disheartening as i'd prefer not a reflect on my two favorite bands starting another war of words.

Well - the comment certainly lends itself to a sarcastic interpretation. At no point did Ashcroft say "Here is an insult for Liam Gallagher" but it is obvious who he is talking about. Have you seen Ashcroft live - i love his music but he tends to talk a little $h** ... and of course the comment was intended to suggest the singer of the 90's band is ridiculous - why else would you bring it up in front of the T in the park audience?

Didn't Liam once say ' I'd never be a baggy' or something along those lines

Ashcroft did not slam Noel, he slammed Liam (re: cast no shadow reference). Just speculate for a second - who else in the world of music could you possibly apply that comment to? I can't think of a single lead singer of a 90's band that used to be 'baggy' and is now a mod. Look at picture from glastonbury 1994 and his latest style ... looks like Ashcroft has drawn the battle lines ...

If the same comment is made by Albarn you'd all roast him. Too much love here for Ashcroft ...

That's because Albarn is a total c*nt, and Ashcroft is the frontman of one of the greatest bands of the last twenty years.
And come on, it's not like Liam hasn't dished out plenty of insults over the years.

Looking for a job with the NME? You do a fine job of making up things.

Yeah, plus I can't see how Liam and Ashcroft couldn't like each other. Same era and same breed, man.

Liam would probably take more offense to Oasis being referred to as a 90's band. Their biggest success was in the 90's of course, but they haven't exactly dried up and gone away since then.

Christ, what a ridiculous thread !
People are turning into fans of Steps or Boyzone, taking offence at any slight thing someone in the media or another band might have said about their favourite singer !
Who gives a monkeys ! It wasnt an insult at all

I honestly couldn't explain it to you if, in fact, you are missing the tone of Ashcroft's comments. I will say this - Liam has done nothing but support Ashcroft and a little return on the investment would be nice to see.

It seems you're looking a little to hard into this, clearly absolutley nothing was meant by it. Are you already employed by the NME? Chill out mate.
