Since when is 4 million sales considered 'cult'. If the representative was from America, then maybe I could let that term slide, but it was the UK division.

oasis = cult band = true. They were massive in 90's they are no longer a mainstream act, they have a cult following.

They were massive in 90's they are no longer a mainstream act, they have a cult following. you're pretty much dead-on- the same could nearly be said for a band like pearl jam who, while certainly having a large throng of supporters, haven't (and never will) regain their nearly insane 90's following. Certainly in the us, Oasis is a cult-like affair.

wonder if the record company will issue stations a 'radio edit', or if it will be the version directly from the album

Oasis are still big fish in the U.K., there's simply no denying that.

I think I'll pass on the Kool-Aid. Not a big fan of mass suicides.

I think cult band is pretty accurate. Either you love them, you hate them, or you've never heard of them. There's really no in between with Oasis from my experiences. And here in America, it's definitely a cult-like following.

I think the meaning of the word cult has changed (kinda like indie doesn't necessarily refer to a label anymore), it does not mean underground any more. It means exactly like you have said above: love/hate, not exactly fitting in with whatever is going on at the moment (thank god). Oasis aren't as mainstream as they once were despite album sales. They only maintain their sales in the UK because of their cult following who have followed them from the start
