What you're also forgetting is that if you're not an atheist, you're not awesome.

i thought theism is religion itself. Depends. Some might say belief in god/gods is an underlying requirement for a religion, and it'd probably be a valid point. But I think in a discussion of "anti-theism" vs "atheism" vs whatever else, I certainly think one can be anti-religion without being anti-god. i must say that belief in gods is an underlying requirement for religion, as you say, but it can also be argued that the priests, rabbis, popes, dalai lamas and all of those are treated as almost godlike. it can be argued that they are a religion alone. their hands are kissed, sometimes they are bowed down to... it doesn't get much clearer. absolutely. religion is the hierarchy that separates man from god. believing in a divine spirit or being without believing in religion is antitheism.

i think noel is anti religion. its all in dykwim: theres the "i met my maker i made him cry...." bit which obviously is saying that todays world is lacking in divine inspiration ("listen up man they dont even know youre born"). then theres also the bit that goes, "idont really care for what you believe, open up your fist or you wont receive, the thoughts and the words of everyman youll need" which shows he feels religion is divisive and narrow minded.
also i seem to recall an interview in which he said he sat down with bono and let him try and convince him of faith. but it didnt work!

I think I would classified Noel as agnostic, he seems not too sure. Some of his songs he as written makes you wonder how could he possible write them without believing in something bigger.

Now that I think about it, how often would an atheist put the word 'soul' into a song.

isn't atheism technically a religion itself?? I would say that Noel is just nothing, not affiliated with any defined ideology relaating to religion

Speaking from my own experience here, it isn't unthinkable that Noel's thoughts on religion/atheism have evolved over time. Its a tough thing to approach intellectually, especially considering our respective Catholic upbringings.

Not to be the dick here, but I own a $12,000 sound system and a pair of $600 Sennsheiser HD 650's headphones, which will pretty much reveal every sonic nuance imagineable.
That said, even though I agree with most and think "paperback" sounds more appropriate and of course "fits better" with "union jack", Noel is undoubtedly, unquestionably and undeniably saying:
PAPERBACK (ha!!! tricked ya) on the LP version of Mucky Fingers.
Absolutely certain.

I own a pair of these and when compared to the Sennheiser's I found them to be sonically superior. Also, they are half the price! Cheers.

I have Sienhieser's HD 555....got them for $180-$200 for my birthday last October. Love those fuckers.
Need another set for my birthday this year though - my current pair is "open ear" so it leaks so much sound. Since I'm sharing an apartment with 3 other guys, that's not gonna work and I'll need the "closed ear" set where sound doesn't leak. I want it to be wireless too. But yeah, great quality headphones they make

Someone probably already posted this, but Noel confirms on his most recent appearance on Russel Brand that it is in fact "paperback." I'm assuming it was someone from this forum who sent in the question.

I don't mean to take away whatever you've gotten from Noel's lyrics, but I wouldn't read too much of his spirituality into them. It's perfectly possible for a songwriter to write inspired-sounding stuff that didn't really mean anything to them other than that it sounded cool at the time. Noel's never really struck me as the type to agonize over making sure every line is worded so as to get his message across.
That said, I would imagine (tragically) that Noel's spirituality is like that of most Britons, it's not so much an active atheism as that it just never comes to mind.

T That's pretty much what I said earlier in this thread and I got bashed for it. I totally agree. Noel doesn't strike me as someone who loses sleep over meaning exactly what he writes. Sometimes songwriters just write what sounds good and catchy. I'm not saying you can't take anything from what Noel writes about. I'm just saying that it's not the brightest idea to hold on to every lyric he writes, especially those from the early days.

just to clear this up, Noel was on Russell Brand's show on 7 July and Russell read an email to Noel... it seems like someone from this thread would have written it! something about how his lyrics seem somewhat atheistic views and sometimes not, and he was asked about the paper bag/back thing.
Noel said it definitely is "back" and that he is an atheist.

Is Noel not a Catholic? He wears a cross too in some of the earlier pictures of him.

Is Noel not a Catholic? He wears a cross too in some of the earlier pictures of him. well I think he was raised one but is now apparently an atheist. I used to wear a cross too, kind of just because it looked nice... and I'm an atheist/agnostic. *hides*
