Did listening to the leaks ruin the album in any way for you guys? I'm trying to decide whether or not to listen when it inevitably leaks...

Not at all. Why would it? They're the same songs, just a couple of months earlier. It's like hearing Dig Out Your Soul in August instead of October. It really makes no difference.

Wasn't it iTunes who leaked the whole album?

i remember i was at work... having a really shitty day... and then outta the sudden LEAK!! and the forum went mad... people commenting the songs..... ranking them,,, mainly saying the were loving the album... i remember i got it before lunch and didn't put it till i got home, opened a beer and played it and the TUTS intro started sounding from the loud speakers.. i fucking remember it like it was yesterday...
then i bought the album as soon as it came out,, but for me still was very fun purchasing it, i really was into it cause their was promotion and interviews, then i won another copy of the album and gave that to me missus.
For me it didnt affect me when it leaked, i enjoyed it the same way,,, and the same happened with HC

Lol, I was in a simelar situation, bleak old shitty school day, exams on the horizon, and out of the blue comes two of the most sought after tunes in a long time, I was mad to get home to hear them, and so upon return, I cleared all possibilty of disturbance away and cranked up Record Machine, which was amazing. I know once this leaks the hunger to download it will eat at me, but I want to experience the buying the spanking new CD on the day, bring it home and listening to it on release day that everyone talks so fondly of, I think the sheer feeling of that maybe way more rewarding.

If you do download it early, just do yourself a favour and resist the urge to listen to it on your laptop right away. Sit down with a few Stella and let it roar through the best stereo you can find. Do it proper.

Sounds like a solid plan, yeah it's definitely worth burning the leak to CD to blast it through a proper sound system, it's all about the first listen, that's the one that counts, but I suppose we'll probably have heard TSOTL ages before the album.
Well, unless someone majorly screws the band by leaking everything months early.

I like to listen really loud with headphones, it makes it more atmospheric I think. Like you're completely absorbed by the music and nothing else. And you hear a lots of things you wouldn't on the CD, especially in BHN, that album's a treasure trove of hidden guitars. There must be about 1000 in DYWIM!

That's true, individual layers and stuff are way more defined, and as you said, you can become completely absorbed with no other "sonic" distractions/interference. My first listen of the latest Stereophonics record was headphones from start to finish and it was unbeatable, the scorching riffs of Soldiers Make Good Targets was such an opener and just set a great tone for what was to follow.

Right - and that's why a lot wait for the CD because downloading as an MP3 leaves a lot of layers compressed. Not the way it was meant to be listened to. Otherwise wait for a FLAC or lossless download.

I never got the fuss about FLAC. What are they, cos you can't put them on your mp3 player can you? You convert them to mp3 anyways I think? Man, I'm crap at using computers...

A little too fussy for me too, but FLAC is lossless so these is no or very little difference from CD quality sound. An MP3 is essentially a compressed file - takes the sound from a CD and essentially flattens it and compresses it to fit into a manageable audio file. For most - like me - the sound is good enough, but the compression results in a 'loss' of sounds quality, range, depth, etc.
I'm no expert, but that's the basics - I'm sure someone else can explain it better...

Is this just for leaks then, cos you obviously can't buy the good quality cd at that point?

Just convert them into .Wav. If you want to listen to Flacs on your computer, you can use WinAmp and I'm pretty sure some mp3 players support them, such as the ones Zen put out.

I am an admin on the Soapbox and remember it pretty vividly because of how much chaos it caused the forum lol.
There are actually two dates of DBTT leaking. It was really one of the weirdest leaks I've ever experienced.
The first leak occurred on April 18. Four tracks leaked that day. Let There Be Love, Keep the Dream Alive, Mucky Fingers, and Meaning of Soul.
Following that over the next few weeks, clips of all the album tracks were floating around. They were chopped clips and were not typical clips.
The second leak (full) occurred on June 3. The source is German iTunes. The reason they leaked it was obviously the release date got transposed (June 30 to 03). It wasnt out very long, but long enough that German fans were able to purchase it and share it. The Soapbox was the first place that it was posted.

Is this just for leaks then, cos you obviously can't buy the good quality cd at that point? Albums rarely leak in FLAC. In fact, I cannot recall one album leaking only in FLAC. Its mainly used in bootleg circles for live recordings, but in piracy, people will make FLACs of albums to preserve the ultimate sound quality and then upload them on torrent sites. FLACs tend to show up well after the MP3 leak sometimes not till after official release. and no FLACs cannot be put on iPods, but you convert to the highest quality MP3 and there you have it on your iPod. Heres the Oasis Lossless Tracker, only serves live material whateverlive.no-ip.org/index.php
