Listen to Slide away again
It's my fav Oasis track and what makes it so incredible is the recorded performances. The production is by no means slick. What it is, is raw talent. Noel playing like a man who knows he is the most important guitarist of a generation. Liam's performance is so epic, filled with an urgency that I don't think has been matched since.
If the boys never do anything that good again I don't care because they gave me that song to listen to.
That being said they are capable of brilliance as we all know
Bring on the new record i'm fucking mad for it....still

What I like is how it's layered....there's like a few hidden parts which you don't pick up on the first listen, which makes it even more incredible. The "Gonna make you mine now" part, followed by the best part of the entire song: "Dont Know, Dont Care, All I knows is that I can take you there" And when Liam sings AHHHHWWW Let me be the one.....3/4ths the way through.... And the guitar solo is good too. I can't make up my mind which I like better, Slide Away or Live Forever. Doesn't matter though, cos they're both fucking fantastic

I agree that it's an amazing song performed live. The word "urgency" describes it perfectly. This is my favorite live version (from Knebworth):
Liam's voice is full of emotion and then Noel joins in and it all comes together perfectly. Plus Liam's little swaying/dancing around 2:20 is funny.

Oh i forgot to comment about it live. Yeah, its one of my favorite live songs The unison "What for" at then end, followed by Liam hitting the mic is majestic too. Slide Away has everything.

noel does an amazing acoustic version on the boot acoustic sessions vol. 2 where the 'dont know, dont care' section is v.powerful. love when after very emotional performances like this, or the psychadelic guitar solo on champagne supernova at earls court in 95, he always thanks the audience with a deadpan 'cheers.'

I'm not sure if the original poster's phrase "recorded performance" meant live performances or the original recorded album version, but I thought he meant the live song. I think many Oasis songs sound better live (or at least in terms of Liam's voice, in the 90s they sounded better live) than on the record. Slide Away is an example, but I also personally like Acquiesce and Gas Panic live.
Roll With It in my opinion is a good song, but the live versions take it to a whole new level. Especially the FTM version (I always have to sing along to "don't let any f'er get in your way!").
But back to Slide Away, one of my favorite parts is the combined "what for," but I never was sure exactly what they were saying -- so thanks for solving that mystery for me! I love the way this song builds up.
And someone just mentioned the Noel acoustic version - also spectacular! Another aspect of Oasis songs that I love - the ability for a song to be successful both as an electric/fast song and an acoustic/slow song. Slide Away, Fade Away, Married with Children, Up in the Sky, etc. all prove this.

That song is absolutely fantastic.... but I wouldn't say that they recorded at their best... I mean, I know DM is fantastic, but I'm not a fan of the band vocals back them... I mean, imagine if the song was recorded with Liam voice in 97 or even 2000... plus Noel's backing vocals sound much more alive (and awesome) in the live versions, since his vocals improved much since 94... I'd say that's oasis best in terms of writing and a really great performance but could be taken a hole other level if recorded for WTSMG, BHN or even SOTSOG
