a small piece my mate has wrote for some mag
In this day and age of football, people forget the true greats. It isn't about who won the Premiership or the Champions League or who is or isn't in G14.
Today Sir Alan Ball passed away, that man was the youngest player in the 1966 World Cup winning team. Never mind the fact that he happened to play for the team that I love, he was adored throughout the land in his time by millions and he fought with dignity and pride to get there picking up trophies and medals along the way.
I don't really care that nearly all of us weren't even alive when he was playing. You just ask your dad what kind of a player Alan Ball was. My dad tells me of stories that hold him up to be a hybrid consisting of the tenacity of a Rooney, the skill of a Ronaldo or a Giggs , the grace of a true professional like Maldini, a goalscorer, a magician and times it all by about 100. Throw into that mix a world champion as well, something that no english player playing today can claim and you have got Alan Ball. Surely that has to intrigue us? How many players could we speak of like that? not very many.
Educate yourselves, watch the footage of him and others like him. The flash of red hair, the white boots (THE very first player to wear white boots). He'll mesmirise you all I guarantee it. Don't settle for this tripe you get fed as football today, Footballs all about knowing where you came from, you need to know that to know where you are going to.
And who was the greatest of them all? well according to my dad and what I've seen....Alan Ball.
