Togo captain Emmanuel Adebayor is contemplating quitting the national team after receiving death threats prior to Saturday's 3-1 defeat of Sierra Leone.
On Friday, the forward said the Hawks could boycott the Group Nine qualifier because the Togolese federation had still not paid bonuses for reaching last year's World Cup.
"I am only trying to put certain things right and correct a few mistakes in Togolese football but it appears some people do not like it," the Arsenal player said in Lome on Saturday.
"Before the match, I received threats to my life warning me to play the match or else.
"Thank God I scored two goals in this qualifying match against Sierra Leone.
"I do not know what would have happened to me if I had not scored those goals."
Adebayor was instrumental in Togo's victory, a win which took them top of the group.
Yet less than 24 hours earlier, the Togolese captain had decided not to play in the Nations Cup tie because of the threats.
"I was convinced by my coach Stephen Keshi to rescind the decision," the lanky striker explained.
"Now I am going to go back to Arsenal to think about my future.
"I have to protect my life and I have a family to look after."
Regarded as a football idol in Togo, Adebayor has come under fire from fans for his demands on the Togo Football Federation.
The international said he would consult Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger as well as members of his family about his future with Togo's national team.

No need to quit, he's been booted out now after a row about pay bonuses!
