WOW. That's what sums it up. I thought the boys were good in June when I saw them in Toronto, but last night took that gig, spat on it and threw it out the window. From the top: I arrived in Madrid on Friday night (5.5 hours by bus from Granada), then did random sightseeing for most of Saturday. My friend and I met two other friends while we were in the line to open the show. I got in line around 5:15, gates opened at 7:45. So 2.5 hours wait, but it was worth it. We were probably 30 people back from the stage, which obviously is not the absolute closest we could be, but it was a lot better than it was for me in Toronto. Plus, I was on the floor, which I hadn't done before. The Coral did a solid job of setting the stage. I had never heard of them before, and they were decent. Not amazing, but they set the tone nicely. The crowd was into their first song, because they had been waiting for ANYTHING for a while, but after that, the Coral mostly just got applause, and not much else. Once Oasis took the stage, though, wow. I was talking to a guy I met at the gig who was from Glasgow (and apparently got to go to the Hampden Park gig...), we were going on about how it was going to be insane once the music started. We were right. Fuckin In the Bushes started and the crowd went nuts. The Spaniards know how to have a good time at a gig, and it was crazy through Turn Up the Sun and Lyla (at which point I needed to take a mini-break to breathe - it was BOILING there). The opening chords of Morning Glory really set everyone off though (Bring It On Down was OK, but I think a lot of the crowd didn't know it). It and Cigarettes and Alcohol were the craziest the crowd got. However, it was during songs like The Masterplan (which the crowd belted out nicely - and thank God they played that. I really was hoping for it over Talk Tonight), Wonderwall, Live Forever and Champagne Supernova that the crowd really got into the gig. Everywhere I looked, I could see people belting out words... Not neccesarily the real, English words, but they were singing what they thought were the words... Which was good enough for me. In between (I think) A Bell Will Ring and Acquiesce, we started singing the Ole football chant. Liam stood back, listened for a while and when we finally quieted down, he said something along the lines of "Is it alright if we go on, then?" This got a chuckle out of the crowd (and several more renditions of the same later on). Along the same lines, both times Liam announced the last song (main set and encore), the crowd audibly shouted no, and I saw a number of people wagging their fingers at the stage. Both times Liam said something which I assume was like "that's the way it is," but I couldn't hear what he said. Overall, an absolutely amazing night. The band was on, and had several long drawn-out endings to songs, which was good to see. Gem was moving all over the place, and Liam did too, doing his typical tambourine-halo bit and staring out over the crowd. The best thing he did was at the end of My Generation, when he got a cigarette from someone in the crowd, and then proceeded to lean against the speakers, smoking while the rest of the band finished the song. Again, absolutely amazing. All the songs were really crisp sounding, the quality of the sound (and the mix) was really good for both bands. The only thing I noticed was that it sounded like Noel's guitar wasn't on for the Meaning of Soul. I could hear/see Gem playing, but I couldn't hear Noel's guitar at all. Just for the Meaning of Soul though, everything else was awesome. I took a good number of pictures, and they turned out solidly. I'll edit this post with a link to them when I get them uploaded, which will be soon. EDIT - PHOTOS!! community.webshots.com/album/499071623KiWwgm
