I sat in the front row for the show, about five feet from Liam the entire time, so it obviously was the greatest gig I've ever seen. I was also properly pissed for most of the night, which only made it better.
I was so close that once when I was yelling Noel's name repeatedly, as he got ready for TIOBI (I had the SF set list so I knew what was coming up), he looked at me and said "calm down." Can you imagine that at a gig in the UK? Laf.
That shows you how different the U.S. gigs are (especially on the west coast).
We literally had our drinks sitting on the stage. Amazing.
Liam had the words of several songs on laminated sheets taped to the monitors at his feet. I could only see Lyla and TUTS, but it appeared there were more underneath. He didn't really need them tho.
Liam was spot on - very sharp voice. Noel was his usual professional self. The bros. had fun, actually exchanged some friendly words off-mic a couple times. Liam, unlike most gigs, wasn't all over the sound guys (maybe he actually did a sound check for once?!).
Gem and Andy and Zak all were at the top of their game. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Now for the best part: Liam gave only one tambourine out all night (I think), and he gave it to our group (of four) ... twice! Not sure exactly when he handed it directly down the first time (that's how pissed I was), I think it was before TIOBI, but he came over and I was turned around at the time, but next thing I know, he handed it to me.
I then handed it down to one of the girls with us, which was probably a mistake. We were surrounded mainly by record executives, so there were just a few of us really into it, singing every word. I was probably the closest of the group (it could've easily been a few others around me, who were also great fans), and having two gorgeous girls with me didn't hurt, so I think that's why he handed it over. (I'm well aware that there's a VERY good chance he was just trying to get it to the girls)
Now for the amazing part, Liam came back out after a Noel song, walked up to us and took it back from her. She was in shock, so sad. But those of us who've really followed rkid know that he's not a bad guy, when sober - which he appeared to be. I think he took it back 'cos we gave it to a different person than he'd intended - but I said to her, "he'll give it back later, just relax."
And what do you know, he did - after My Generation. This time he gave it right to her.
To my knowledge, it was the only one he gave out, and because of the cirumstances, we were very lucky. Like I said, once in a lifetime experience. And the girl he gave it to is a big fan, and a sweetheart, so I felt good about her having it. I could've easily taken it, but I think we all here in the U.S. are now kinda like Oasis missionaries, trying to spread the word, and obviously now she and her friends are HUGE fans and will probably follow the band closer.
Because I was up front I couldn't tell how the crowd was. The Bowl was totally full, I turned around several times to catch if people were singing, and it was pretty subdued. But more importantly, it was a great crowd and a crackin' show in front of a million record execs. So the night really couldn't have gone better.
Here's two pics I took. Didn't take too many, somone spilled beer on my camera! Laf.
