The 1967 Beatles track, A Day In The Life, has been hailed the best British song of all time. The song, which featured on the classic Beatles album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, topped a survey of music experts by Q magazine.
The magazine called the track "the ultimate sonic rendition of what it means to be British".
The Kinks' song Waterloo Sunset came second in the poll, ahead of Oasis' Wonderwall in third place.
Earlier this year, in a survey to find the greatest tune between 1955 and 1964 BBC Radio 2 listeners overlooked two Beatles singles in favour of The Kinks' You Really Got Me.
BEST BRITISH SONG 1. A Day In The Life - The Beatles 2. Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks 3. Wonderwall - Oasis 4. God Save The Queen - Sex Pistols 5. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen 6. My Generation - The Who 7. Angels - Robbie Williams 8. Life on Mars? - David Bowie 9. Sympathy For The Devil - Rolling Stones 10. Unfinished Sympathy - Massive Attack A Day In The Life, the Beatles' most ambitious work to date, featured what Lennon described as "a sound building up from nothing to the end of the world".
In fourth place in the Q poll was the Sex Pistols' controversial hit God Save The Queen, with Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody rounding out the top five.
Robbie Williams' Angels, described by the magazine as "virtually our alternative national anthem" polled at number seven - two places ahead of British rockers the Rolling Stones, with Sympathy For The Devil at number nine.

I so disagree with the results. A Day In The Life is such a meh song. The Beatles made much better songs than that.

RUBBISH POLL BY Q Whilst both those bands were pretty important and certainly summed up the times like you said - I don't thnk very many of their songs are timeless. The Kinks and The Beatles will always be great and those songs will last forever whereas White Riot, Tube Station etc don't really make much sense any more.

Plus The Clash were very London-centric. I don't think they could claim to represent the whole of Britain. The Kinks could say that, as vcould The Beatles. The Clash and The Jam (to a lesser extent) were pretty regional in their outlook.

It came out just after princess di died and people needed a good pop song. Oasis were knocked back a bit from be here now not being as amazing as everyone expected and people needed a new idol. Whether you like him or not (and most loseres on here wil hate him purley cos the gallaghers do) he came in and filled that void. He was the new teenage girl heart throb and his record sales and his dates at knebworth which over took Oasis' record of the biggest standing gig in british history prove this. He might not write his own songs and he might only be a fat dancer from take that, but you cant argue with the facts.

When I was a young kid, I get psychedelic while I was listening to A day in the life, but c'mon just admit, it surely isn't one of their best...

The magazine called the track "the ultimate sonic rendition of what it means to be British". Unfinished Sympathy - Massive Attack A Day In The Life, the Beatles' most ambitious work to date, featured what Lennon described as "a sound building up from nothing to the end of the world". ive been thinkin and thats always dangerous, lol you see the above quote , "what it means to be british" thats the problem i have with this list..i am american i dont consider songs1-3-5-6-7-8-9 dont remind me of britain they mean the same to americans sympathy for the devil doesent conjure up memories of the uk..my idea of a sonic sound of wat it means to be british are tunes that when you hear them you think of the british way of life..that said here is my top 10 1- thats entertainment- the jam 2-anarchy in the uk- sex pistols 3-waterloo sunset-the kinks 4- ciggaretts and alcohol- oasis 5-parklife- blur 6-londons burning the clash 7-common people -pulp 8 down in the tubestation at midnight- the jam 9- panic (the that goes panic in the streets of london, not sure of the title ) the smiths 10- god save the queen-sex pistols when i hear those songs i think of life in britain and thats what being british means ..jmo

Totally agree kalas. That's Entertainment is the most quintessentially British song ever.
I think the description Q gives of A Day In The Life changes what the poll is about. If the poll is about Britishness, That's Entertainment should be top. If it's just about British songs then fair enough.
