Oasis Celebrate Their Record-breaking Odyssey By Liz Kennedy
Wednesday 27th July 2005
Even Liam Gallagher will be happy about this record. It was definitely the fastest sell-out at the Odyssey, with no maybe about it. Oasis smashed all previous Odyssey Arena records when all 10,000 tickets for their December 18 Belfast concert sold out in 15 minutes. This equates to an amazing 11 tickets per second and nearly 700 per minute.
Following the sell-out, promoter Wonderland Promotions announced a second Oasis date for the following day, December 19. This has also sold out. The Oasis dates follow the release of the band's charttopping single Lyla and the back-to-form album Don't Believe The Truth.
Commenting on the sell-out, Odyssey Arena Chief Executive, Nicky Dunn, said: "Oasis have been one of the most popular live acts for almost a decade.
"However, to sell 10,000 tickets in 15 minutes is an unbelievable achievement both by the band and by the staff of our box-office and Ticketmaster." Belfast singer-songwriter Andy White reviewed the first gig on the Oasis UK tour, when they played a smallscale show at London's Astoria. It augurs well for the pre-Christmas Odyssey Arena dates: "For when you look round and see people holding each other and telling each other they are going to Live Forever into each others' open ears; when Liam promises love will conquer all and then stands at the front of the stage daring anyone in the front 32 rows to try to look as good as he does armed only with a tambourine and some dodgy deck shorts; when Noel picks up his acoustic for the first time and plays the first line of Yesterday, then launches into a new song with the word Yesterday in the first few lines - that is when you start to enter the world of Oasis." If you're one of the lucky ticket-holders, keep your fingers crossed for a Christmas Champagne Supernova and if you missed out on the Mancunian superstars, Don't Look Back in Anger, I hear you say!
Prior to the Oasis concert the Odyssey Arena record sell-out was 25 minutes for Shania Twain in February 2004.
