just a few points an questions in need clearing
1) how many has copies has each album sold in uk/eur/u.s?(alan mcgee quoted saying around 41 mill or summat?)

2) oasis were massive in the u.s at their peak, an they have sold around 6.5 million records over there.radiohead an coldplay who everyone says has have cracked havent shifted that between em!.its all down to the press they cant admit just how big oasis got an were scared of them being bigger than the beatles so they turned on them.but watch interviews an footage from america an you can see how big they were , they were mobbed everywhere chatshow rooms always packed , fans screaming etc.they played every big venue over there , an every major venue in the world for that matter an sold them out.all this was hidden by the british press until recently cos they popularity isnt what it was , an thats down to the press an all .WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SAW AMERICAN FOOTAGE OF OASIS APART FROM DOCUMENTARIES IN THE U.K?
COS WHEN YOU DO IT JUST SHOWS HOW BIG THEY WERE SCYHO SHOULDVE BEEN MASSIVE OVER THERE BUT THEY DARENT PROMOTE THEM COS NOBODY CAN SURPASS THE BEATLES . SIMPLE AS THAT

Hell, according to "I Love the '90s" on VH1, the mainstream in America thinks Oasis broke up because they became "too big, too soon".

True about the Clash beerbaron but you must remember around the time "Combat Rock" was released, new wave was considered the in thing, which is what a lot of the songs on "Combat Rock" were. And had they stayed together, things would've probably been the same with them as things went with Oasis. Sad but probably true.

The thing is at the time Oasis hit it big, the American audience soon got sick of their cockiness. Americans always seem to want an underdog to cheer, someone who isn't full of themselves. And while most of it at the time was just Liam not knowing when to shut up, Americans think that if one band member says something, then that comment represents the whole band. Same can be said with John Lennon's 1966 Jesus comment. People wern't necessarily singling out John but they went after the Beatles as a whole.

Another factor I believe to be the cause of Oasis' loss of popularity stateside was the pop movement and the depression addict movement in the late nineties. Around the time Oasis released "Be Here Now" pop groups like NSync and the Backstreet Boys were beginning to get attention rather than bands who work their asses of, like Oasis. Or it was some angst ridden band who had one too many piercings and screamed incoherently into a microphone. Coupled with the fact that "Be Here How" was considered a step down from "Morning Glory", America just stopped showing interest.

toast makes some good points I agree, I think its a combination of OASIS not kissing ass ,and the points toast made as well,1 thing though america does love a comeback story (aerosmith, elton, rod stewart, ect ect) all those guys fell off big time here and then actually got more popular as time went by .WHO knows?
if the next cd is a classic maybe they will be REDISCOVERED BY THE MINDLESS MASSES??

combat rock was the clash past their best toast.

it was the american hit album that broke them in the states.

london calling was probably their best international work, but the early days were the clash at their best.

that band had no fear and their fans fought side by side with them. total loyalty which is present to this day.

if you wanted to like this music then you would be beaten up/fight for...etc.

at the time we had to fight for the music we believed in and it was violent toast.

funny now, you just watch a band these days without the smell of blood around you!

I agree that "Combat Rock" was them past their prime. It was the Clash's Let It Be. I refuse to except "Cut The Crap" as the Clash's final effort because it was a slap in the face to fans of the band in my opinion and Mick wasn't in the band. Joe, Mick, and Paul were the nucleus of that group. "London Calling" was their best album and I agree with all you said of the Clash beerbaron. The Clash are one of the greatest rock bands in history. I regret not being born until after they broke up.
