Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher wants his band to be called a "pop group" - because he is sick of the "indie" label.
Despite initially signing to an independent record company, Creation, in 1993, Gallagher insists the band have severed their indie roots - and share more in common with pop.
The singer says, "I love pop music. That's what we do. We're not an indie band. What's an indie band? To me that's the Inspiral Carpets or Echobelly. Forget that.
"What's the point of not putting out a great single every few months? That's what The Smiths used to do and it was an event.

i dunno, to me, 'pop' has a negative connotation (i think of britney spears and the like) so i wouldnt want to classify him as a pop icon

we all say things we don't really mean. He has a good point about The Smiths but 'pop' does sound shitty. Surely we can't categorise Oasis the same as Busted, the Darkness n all that other crap Ok so they aren't indie....but pop?

let's put this way. first there was only classical music. then jazz, rockabilly, rock n roll... etc. so you now you have classical music, and POP(Popular) music , such as rock n roll, pop/rock, indie, even fookin heavy metal and hip-hop. that's all part of the pop culture. of course the term "pop" has 2 meanings. "pop" as a culture, and "pop" as a soft kind of music, catchy and all that. and even when you refer to pop as a kind of soft music, there are great "pop"musiscians. like coldplay for example.

Actually in all my years I have never hear Oasis called an indie band, cos there not. I understand what Liam is saying though there not really "indie" in the terms of being sort of underground and away from the mainstream, Oasis are at least in Britian are more mainstream... I think Liam should stick with his "Rock n roll" band label

I think Liam should stick with his "Rock n roll" band label yeah definitely - thats what they are and always will be - just a rock n roll band. i can understand him wanting to distance the band from the indie tag, but the word 'pop' is just too commercial and teeny boppy for me! Liam is a rock star, not a pop star

an "indie" band these days are something that students like this week before they move on to some other kewl thing.
oasis may have been indie for about three seconds before they became the biggest band in the world once.
rock n roll band.
sex pistols/the who/t-rex/oasis
that looks good on paper to me.
oasis are a rock n roll band and who could doubt it.
indie is for bands like radiohead.

As much as I hate to pigeon hole bands, i'd have to put Oasis under the Beatles/Stones/Pistols/Jam/Roses...
Whatever that is called? Pop?
Well pop means popular music doesn't it? But people refer to Britney Spears/Blue an' all that shite as pop. So I think there should be a new 'official' title.....for bands like Oasis, they should be called pop, BUT, Spears/blue/Busted etc should be called bubblegum pop. Or cheese pop....... or cheese flavoured pop...... or just cheese. Then again just call it Shit!

Well the argument is basically the same as were the beatles rock or pop. It just depends how you define the word "Pop", which used to just mean popular and not have such a negative connotation. Now when somewhen says pop you immediatly think Brittney Spears or timberlake

A rock 'n' star, and one of a dying breed it would seem. We need more rock stars like him.
