"Best British album ever"
Oasis have beaten their heroes the Beatles to the title of Best British Album Ever.
Their 10-year-old creation, Definitely Maybe, has topped a staff poll of 50 best albums by Q magazine. Second on the list is the Fab Four's Revolver, released in 1966, almost 30 years before the Oasis debut.
The poll comes after the Mancunian band, who have always looked to the Beatles for inspiration, signed Zak Starkey, the son of former Beatle Ringo Starr as their latest drummer. The Gallagher brothers experienced supersonic success after they were discovered, with Definitely Maybe becoming the fastest-selling album of all time. The band also beat heavyweights such as the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, and Pink Floyd in the survey of the music magazine's staff. The Rolling Stones' Beggars Banquet comes seventh, The Smiths' The Queen is Dead eighth, Led Zeppelin's Led Zeppelin III came ninth, and Massive Attack's Blue Lines 10th. The Sex Pistols' Never Mind The Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols comes third on the list, followed by Radiohead's OK Computer.
The poll is featured in the July issue of Q which is out on June 1.
Here are the top 10 :
1. Oasis - Definitely Maybe 2. The Beatles - Revolver 3. Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks - Here's the Sex Pistols 4. Radiohead - OK Computer 5. The Clash - London Calling 6. David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars 7. The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet 8. The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead 9. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin III 10. Massive Attack - Blue Lines

wait a minute, zep III instead of zoso or houses of the holy??? i disagree with that.
also, i'd have to agree with dm being #1. revolver in many peoples opinions (including mine) is the greatest beatles album. that should be #1.
also, where's a who album such as 'quadrophenia', 'tommy', or 'who's next'? or floyd, like 'dark side of the moon', 'wish you were here' or 'the wall'?
or robbie williams??? (JUST KIDDING LOL)

an oasis album occupying the top spot? ridiculous...wasnt it q last time that polled radiohead as best live gig ever?
the best beatle album thing is always a row between pepper, revolver and white album...this time revolver won..

those polls are always bullshit! they sell papers, thats all.
the first clash album was more raw than def maybee but oasis will stand the test of time, unlike radiohead who just do trendy shite and will sink down the charts over the next few years.
student rock.
what are they saying you radiohead fans? @@@ well?
anything interesting that the rest of us should know about?

i would love to know how Kid A and Amnesiac could ever be called "trendy"?
btw - makes me sick to see Blur above Floyd. and i wonder why only one album per artist was allowed?

i dont think you can argue with ok computer being on there. Its the best album of the 90's for me, it just pips definitely maybe. The lyrics to songs like karma police and paranoid android are amazing, really funny and very interesting. The last verse to paranoid android after he's sang "rain down" is spine tingling, so powerful, when he sings "god loves his children, god loves his children, yeah!" it never fails to send a shiver down my spine and then youve got that amazing guitar work at the end.
Youve also got the teryfying climbing up the walls followed by no suprises, which is really comforting. Its just a brilliantly put together album. Every song is a fantastic one.
For me radiohead are the type of band that whenever you listen to them they open your your mind to a totaly different universe. Ok computer gives you a little something different everytime you listen to it. I think people will be descovering it in 10, 20, 30 years time and beyond.
I dont understand some people i no who think the bends is better, which imo is pretty average. Some great songs like fake plastic trees and some shit boring ones like high and dry and nice dream.

the clash first album and wheres the stone roses debut Is that not the stone roses debut in 17th? That should be way higher for a start. Blur at 12 is a joke. I think Ok computer did deserve to be in there though. Oasis deserved to win by far the best album on there

i dont think you can argue with ok computer being on there. Its the best album of the 90's for me, it just pips definitely maybe. Never thought you would have said that... of all people! Ok Computer is way too depressing for me, slit your wrists job infact. None of the lyrics on Ok computer beat the lyrics of Slide Away, Live Forever or Supersonic.

i love that album. I dont find them depressing, the only real depressing song on the album for me is climbing up the walls, which is about ppl in a mental hospital who couldnt sleep with the lights off because they thought that evil spirits would come in through their bedroom windows and take their soul away. Its ok though, its a song written to scare you and it does, thats sometimes good to have in a song because it creates the biggest impact and gets through to you and touches you. Thats what radiohead are so great at, they make songs that are both really tragic and beautiful at the same time.
Dont get me wrong though, i prefer oasis as i think that ok computer is radioheads only fantastic album, oasis have written two fantastic albums and the rest are good. I have time for both bands, i listen to radiohead when i wanna sit down and just listen to music and apreciate it for what it is because thats the only level it makes sense on to me. I can listen to oasis for that reason aswell and also when your going out with your friends there is no better band to listen to.

I dont know whether I'm alone in saying this.. but I'm always amazed that in a list like this Dire Straits doesnt get a mention. Their albums Dire Straits & Making Movies in particular show magnificient songwriting and musicianship, that I beleive have stood the test of time.
I'm not saying number one... but not in the top 50 atleast?? Come on.
Jusy my 2 cents worth.

Wow, that's brilliant! Deserved number one spot I'd say... Since there's just 1 album per band, I'd say it isn't a factual picture, erm, the Beatles released loads of great albums, that are far better than a few mentioned here,.. but I agree with most of them, yea

ok computer is really just ok!
get a degree and then try music, if it falls through then you have that to fall back on?
the safe society that we live in is a breeding ground for bands like "blue" and "jet".
enjoy and vote via text at the next nokia sponsored concert you wimps.

so, radiohead did a song about mentals, AND?
fuck sake, my brother is mental and very violent and trys to kill us!
and he has come at us with big sharp knives.
you deal with it as best you can!
reality v radiohead
reality is much more nasty.
it may be cool sitting in a room listening to radiohead and thinking about mental health but just try dealing with it in real life.
and people who have to deal with this shit in their lifes prefer to listen to uplifting music.
not radiohead you student posers!
