Great work batfink30 ! What model of Nikon DSLR have you bought? Here's one of my favorite places: it's located at the very end of a narrow valley in South Tyrol, Italy. There's a large meadow with this little church in the middle... and behind it, only deep woods and huge mountain peaks for miles. When I took this picture it was quite late in the afternoon. I just stood there and contemplated the view, with the sound of the wind flowing and whistling through the mountains and the warm, low sun at my back. A truly magical moment.

I love Italy, such an amazing country, been to quite a few places. I've got the Nikkon D5300 with a 18-105mm kit lens. I used a Polarizing filter with the lake pic and you can see its much darker. Ive travelled a heck of a lot and been all over the world with my hand held but that was my first time with a DSLR and I'm really stunned at the quality of it, I never knew there was such a difference between that and a hand held. I really just set it to f/16-18 for sharpness and shot away and everything else on auto. It's easy! lol.

I really just set it to f/16-18 for sharpness and shot away and everything else on auto. It's easy! lol. Nice choice! I've never tested the D5300 before but I've tried the previous versions of the D5x00 series and they were excellent. Very small and light but also very capable. The 18-105 might be the standard go-to lens but I think it's really good for the price! It's very versatile and reasonably sharp at all focal lengths. Vibration Reduction system works great too. Actually I wouldn't set it to f/18 though unless you really need that extra depth of field. The sharpness peak is around f/8-f/11 for most lenses, so that's where I keep them most of the time when photographing landscapes. I very rarely go beyond f/16 because of diffraction, which actually reduces overall sharpness (and this is particularly true with zoom lenses). At f/18 it's not really that noticeable unless you're looking at the picture at full magnification on the screen, but go beyond f/22 and it'll become apparent. Some lenses are also more affected by this than others.
