I know if you dont vote then you cant complain but I just hate the fact that every politician is a lying, balding 50-odd year old bastard from hell. I didn't actually vote this time, it appeared that my local polling station is outside my local pub ....so I thought i'd go in there and have a few drinks with a few of the lads and think about it (and chat up the several bar-babes in there ). Before I knew it it was closing time and I was absolutely fooking wankered! I couldn't even say 'Blair is a tosser' by the time I came out! Oh well, I was gonna vote labour anyways

Labour In 1979, when Thatcher was first elected, the richest 10% of the UK's earners paid around a third of all income tax. By the end of the Conservatives' administration in 1997, the top 10% of earners were paying nearly half of all income tax Its also estimated that 95% of all income tax is paid by the highest earning 50% maybe its just me but i prefer actual economic data to pretty pictures speaking of which - "nice" pic in your sig there dixonhill. thanks for that one.... the poll tax - enough has already been said about that. of course it was a massive mistake and Howard was a part of that. he has apologised for it though and people should be entitled to second chances. after all, tony blair has just been given one... but if you guys want to base your opinions on one mistake that occurred over 15 years ago then go ahead. labour actually learned from their mistakes of the past so now we have new labour. i think the conservatives have done the same and will continue to do so. anyway congratulations to labour! obviously im not their biggest fan but if certain problems are addressed early on then they can maybe keep the country on the right track personally i doubt they can though. they've run the economy like a dream huh? well firstly they inherited a great economy from the conservatives, and secondly if you look beyond the newspaper headlines you'll find its not quite the dream they will have you believe. lets just see how they deal with the pension crisis, slowing economic growth, slowing consumer spending and rising interest rates. and lets see how our pay packets look after next years inevitable national insurance and council tax increases are announced....

Let me guess, you voted torie? ;D neh i voted Green.... yeah right cheers dixonhill - id rather you had fucking spock than him and that troll of a wife! ;D i did vote for conservative, but getting away from the national picture, i live in a labour stronghold (so my vote meant shit) and the local MP is the biggest waste of space ever. he does absolutely nothing for my area. he only appears every 4 years to put his name on the ballot paper! the conservative guy was young, had some real ideas and enthusiasm - regardless of party politics its a shame he didnt get in and actually do something for the city

Yet people vote for some conservative guy that I - and I assume, a lot of people - havent even heard of.

hmm well that seems pretty typical of the national picture. you've got the protest vote against the war going from labour to the lib dems of 3.2%. then youve got the disillusioned waivers who got fed up with Blair and decided to return to conservative, 1.9%. add them together and it means labour loses the seat - probably has very little to do with local politics! but thats the system we have - the local elections are secondary to the national one. people pick blair or howard, labour or conservative - they dont pick local MPs like mr smith or mrs jones...

This is the thing that gets me though, can you belive that the turn out for the whole country is only like 63% or something? Thats just insulting to the people who fought and died to gain and preserve our right to have one!!

She screwed this country and the working classes right up the arse to such an extent that we will still be feeling the fallout in another 15 years time! Socially, economically and environmentally, she did a hell of a lot of damage. Some irreversable.

Socially, economically and environmentally, she did a hell of a lot of damage. Some irreversable. Me misinformed? lol. i'll refrain from calling you a simpleton in return but its you who is misinformed and ignorant if you dont acknowledge the vast strides this country made under Thatcher and the fact that she saved the UK from the terrible times of the 70s thankfully we will still be feeling the benefits in 15 years time but i will say from the start that Thatcher's record in all areas is mixed - she made a hell of a lot of mistakes that cost individuals and the country as a whole, dear. However the overall positive impact of the conservative government up to 1997 is beyond measure. Either you simply havent read about it or you're choosing to ignore it... and ive said it before on this forum - the biggest endorsement of Thatcher's policies is that she killed hard-left socialism stone dead and forced 'new labour' to emerge. Labour's current economic policies are built upon Thatcherite foundations and also the biggest endorsement of Tony Blair's policies will be the killing of the far-right element of the conservative party (which Thatcher admittedly strayed into too often) Thatcher crushed the unions (thankfully a truly irreversable and much-needed victory), raised productivity and GDP, private home ownership, individual share ownership, privatised inefficient national industries and promoted enterprise and self sufficiency. She recognised that the aging inefficient heavy industries of this country were failing and needed to be improved or closed and replaced with high tech manufacturing and new service industries. she understood economics - supply and demand, monetary policy, comparative and competitive advantage, efficiency, productivity. You obviously do not but she did make mistakes and the working class, particularly in the north, paid a high price and should have had a lot more help. that aside, the country is so much better off for having her.
